Crossbows were great for that because the shots didn't arc like with bows
Oh trust me... that is a disadvantage for the crossbow... IF you know the trick with bows.
Well a guy with a longbow can cover an entire battlefield if he's got enough height. The straight shot is defs not a disadvantage though, I'd switch to crossbows if I knew the range bonus would be more useful on the map. Plus bows can't hit something that's too high up, but crossbows are great for that. Generally crossbows also do more damage. And the crossbows in FFT can do poison and blind effects, unlike the bows which can only do elemental damage.

It looks like the bows arc pretty much straight upwards, like in FFT. I could probably hit one or two squares outside the effective range, if it works the way I think it does.

Part 4 is up!
In the previous part I defeated all the enemy's damage dealers with little fuss involved. The enemy has three archers (only one is actually of the archer class, the other two are just soldiers with bows), including their leader left, so I tried persuading them to join my side. I particularly wanted the leader to join me. It took me a minute to realise that that was impossible, as no matter how low her health got I had no chance of capturing her. After trying the same with her other soldiers, Jil-Giles eventually got fed up and struck her down with a single stroke. The fight ended a total victory for my side.

Afterwards, JG has a chat with Ivanna over the camp's fire. She tells him a story of vengeance, that her father died a mysterious death after ceding his territory to Felis, and the Holy Empire of Lodis. She suspects her uncle, who was next in line. She asks to come with us to learn the truth about her father's death. Sorely in need of the manpower, we've no choice but to have her along.

Part 5 is up!
The battle starts as we arrive at the duke's palace following a short verbal exchange between Jil-Giles and the unnamed enemy commander, an "Imposing Knight". The Imposing Knight orders his underling Gimel, a fellow knight in full mail, to stop me from entering the fortress. As the Imposing Knight flees, I get to see the enemy's entire force as it arrives: an archer, a wizard, a cleric, a soldier wearing a bow, two or three more soldiers with swords and shields, Gimel the leader, and a few others.

I start moving up. Two of his men break off to cover one of the flanks, and the rest of his men take positions near the stair where I've started charging my entire 6 man force towards their superior position atop the battlements, hoping my shields will protect me from their ranged attacks as I advance. The knight is the only one willing to engage in melee, and I quickly surround him on all four sides with my Jil-Giles and Ivanna, backed up by my two soldiers. Despite my men being extremely exposed with their backs facing the enemy, their soldiers are reluctant to engage me. Their wizard and cleric cast not a single spell, and only some of their archers open fire, despite all being within range. I wear down the knight, unable to move, over the course of several turns. Their soldiers finally get a move on and start attacking my men, but by now it's too late. With my ninja drawing some fire and my cleric healing the soldier closest to the enemy, it's only a few turns before I manage to bring down the leader and win the battle.

Normally I never leave a battlefield without clearing it completely, but considering the size of the force I was facing I decided it would be best to end the fight quickly. I was quite intimidated when the enemy first appeared and I was expecting a tough fight and a few retries. It was completely the opposite as I easily surrounded the enemy leader and cheesed him unpunished for more than three turns. I was surprised at how easily they let me win.

Part 6 is up!
This one's really short. There's a cutscene where we learn what happens to Jil-Giles, I blow all my cash on longswords and hire a Hawkman who I name Weiss, then we see a cutscene about some evil dude.

I'll take suggestions for names as well, I wasn't prepared at the time I made part six so I ended up naming the Hawkman on the spot. The soldiers can be male or female, I think the hawkpeople are only male, and the octopus or dragon can be whatever you like I guess. :p I don't think I can rename troops.

Added a new game to the list. What say we take a vote for a second LP? There doesn't seem to be a magnitude of interest for the first, and it's rather an easy game. Part 7 is up today.

... CW3 is also pretty awesome. I'll refrain from commenting until I'm back home and have my headphones again, though. That's when the TO stuff gets listened through :V

Part 8 is up!
We finish the swamp battle where we lost our hawkman, and learn a bit more about our obligation to the woman who rescued us in the last part. After losing a unit and getting some sick loot from the fight, I want to head back to an area with a store and reorganize. Then I walk right into a random encounter. Wasn't even expecting that. I feel outnumbered as the fight starts, but they only have three melee fighters while the rest of their force are weaksauce archers who only do 5-9 damage per attack. I can ignore them.

---

I want to make class changes and make my soldiers knights and maybe try out an archer, and I also really want a wizard.. I have no idea how to do that. I know there are stat requirements, and in an earlier part some of my soldiers fulfilled them for the knight role, and yet I couldn't switch. No clue what might be up.

You need the stats AND the medal.

They are essentially achievements for your individual soldiers. I believe they give bonuses but they are also the only way to get to most of the classes.

Well... doing stuff, mostly >_>

You qualify for sword master, ferex, by dodging stuff. You qualify as a knight, apparently, by getting counter-attacked a bunch. You can get a full spoiler here and here, heh. Several of the more basic classes just have stat and/or alignment requirements, though. You don't need emblems for archers, ninja, wizards, or clerics.

Incidentally, a lot of them can be gained in training, if you're looking for emblems immediately.

That's what I needed to know, thanks! Not really looking for them immediately now that I know most of them are just stat requirements. That's some very pertinent information I feel and I was willing to be spoiled on it rather than being forced to guess. :p

In FFT you have jobs and job levels, and you require levels in certain jobs to use certain other jobs. It's very irritating because the only way to get new units is by recruiting them at the Office, and they're always level one. It's a bitch to grind new units really late in the game. So I think it's brilliant that when you hire new units in this you can blow extra dosh to have him start at a higher level. Genius!
