I've never seen a vampire in any of my fortresses.
« on: June 02, 2014, 12:18:37 am »

I've been playing for well over a year now , had fortresses with 300 dwarves, and tried bumping up vampire count in advanced world gen to 1000.  I have never once seen a vampire in any fortress I've made.

So..... yeah.  I see all these vampire threads in here and I'm like... what vampires?

 :o  That's really odd.

Do you start all your forts at like year 10 of world gen or something?

That's the only thing I can think of other than extremely anomalous luck? Are you running vanilla DF?

running LNP

And I've started forts from everywhere from year 2 to year 5000+

Also, I've seen vampires numerous times when I play adventure mode.  I just never get them in my forts.  Ever.  Not one single time.

Well, have you been finding randomly dead dwarves in any of those forts?

Do you keep all your dwarves together in dorms? If so, are there any particular dwarves that seem lethargic or have something unusual about them?

I would suggest a worldgen issue, but if you're seeing them as an adventurer, then it sounds like most likely just luck.

Consider... I only see vampires in maybe 1/3 of my mid range forts of 50ish dwarves or so. If I assume that I myself am average, and then consider maybe 5,000 people who might come on these forums and say stuff like this if they experienced it...

Then statistically, you would expect a couple of those people to have run 20-30 similar forts still without ever having gotten a vampire. And they would be fairly likely to go start a thread about it (this one) sooner or later.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

No, and I run cursecheck whenever I get to a new 50 dwarf point.  Never get vampires.

and GavJ:   Yeah... it's pretty much just luck on my part I'm guessing.  RNG hates me on this given I actually want one as a bookkeeper / lone watchman.  Not sure which I'd actually do, but yeah.

The only suggestion I can think of would be to create a world with a load of vampire curses and let it run a good 500 year or more. Then check the legends and make sure you embark from a dwarven civilization that has multiple vampires living in it. A vampire monarch would be even better since you can guarantee that they immigrate to your fortress once it becomes the mountain home.

I have similar issues with low to no vampires when I generate pocket worlds.  I never investigated the issue, but it makes sense that world size has an effect just like world age.

Well, if you don't mind cheating a bit you can use savescumming to get one pretty reliably.

Do this:
Gen a world with lots of vampires
Check legends mode for a civ with multiple still living vamps
Play a fort with that civ up to migrant wave #3
Save frequently during the season that you expect the wave
When you get it, cursecheck and then, if no vamp, reload the last save
Repeat the last step until you get a vamp

Migrant waves are randomly generated when they hit the map. It's a little tedious, but barring absurd luck you'll get one pretty quickly. I did this when i tried a vampire fort project a while back and was able to get a vampire in less than 20 minutes both times i did it.

Incidentally, if migrant groups are going to travel on the world map like armies will in the next version then this method may have a pretty short shelf life.

I just recently started playing DF (Mac LNP). My first game, as I was following the fortress tutorial on the wiki, had a vampire when I had 30 or so dwarves. I read up on it on the wiki and managed to set him up as a one-dwarf militia and trap him in a room with a floodgate. I had the worst time trying to make it so he didn't leave the room the moment I assigned a dwarf to place the floodgate. It took about 7 floodgates to get it right, and another poor dwarf ended up trapped with him. That one never got bitten and starved to death. I think he was following the vampire for some reason.

The person who brought up pocket worlds being a possible cause of the problem makes a good point. Pocket worlds seems to have a lot of issues like this where things that are relatively common in a normal sized world can be completely wiped out or simply not present in a pocket sized world. I used to run only large worlds for the greatest variety but due to performance issues and the desire for a long history I know only gen medium worlds. They seem to be large enough to contain a proper variety and balance of entities while still small enough that world gen doesn't crash when you try to run the history more than a few centuries.

Alright so update, I finally saw my first vampire - it was a ~year 600ish embark in a highly evil aligned world, I got her on my fourth year.  She was in the military for a while, but I noticed people getting their blood drained, figured out the culpret, and.. made her mayor and bookeeper in a separate room/area.  To be opened when my fortress was not locked down to prevent zombie attacks, so said vamp mayor / swordswoman could cut down zombies at my leisure and thin their numbers between migrant waves.

You should have stoned her. Crush vampires with boulders. She will only get slower with lack of booze.

That would be a waste in my opinion.  Even slow she's still a weapon.

Ugh, I know the feeling. I'm glad you finally got one.

While stoning a vampire is certainly how I would do it if I wanted them dead (certainly seems cruel enough if you have the spare stone), or if I wanted to execute anyone in my fort really, I agree that it is sort of a waste if you have been unable to get one until now. Vampires, even if slow from booze-withdrawal can be useful. So long as they are sane, they stop a fort from crumbling (though I suppose events that would kill everyone else would be rather bad for their happiness levels), and the undead ignore them until attacked, right?
