One thing I wondered is will the same seeds (and stats) work? It doesn't look like he changed anything in the generation, other than trees and game mechanics.
Of course seeds from 0.34 will not work. Trees alone would be enough, but he added hill dwarf settlements, new demon sites and plethora of other things. I bet there are also some tweaks to existing stuff.

Major release = fort from scrath. Period. No save compability. Period. Get over it, people.

the way history generates has significant differences too, so even if the geography was unchanged that would come out different

i don't know why you'd want to - most of the updates wouldn't work with your fort anyway. like when minecarts came in you had to regen your fort anyway to get them. Getting that kind of stuff on and old fort would require hacking the already-generated specs of your civilization.

It could be argued that Toady could write code to retrofit all new features onto old forts/maps, but it wouldn't be a good use of the Devs time to back-compatible the new game, just focus on making the new one the best possible.

Is it just me, or is the release date unfortunately burdened by a second release date that I have to wait for.

I don't know about you guys, but I don't play DF without Dwarf Therapist. So I have to wait until it comes out again.

Although I could mess around with Adventurer mode, since Therapist doesn't relate to that mode.

I've never played with Dwarf Therapist, so that's no big deal to me.  I do like using DFHack though, usually to fix bugs and strange stuff that happens like dwarves getting stuck in mid air.  So yeah, I'll be happier when that's released, but I'll survive until then.

I can just mess around in adventure mode and arena while I wait for Dwarf Therapist. I hope the Mayday graphics pack updates quickly though.

I can just mess around in adventure mode until the wiki starts being useful.

Since I'm a purist and don't use any third-party utilities (tilesets, DFHack, Therapist, etc.) I could also probably start up fort mode instantly anyway.

My (almost) first experience with DF was making a fort while reading a wiki quickstart guide... well, after that I kinda got the hang of vanilla DF interface, and didn't use any other interface utilities. Well, other than trying out Stonesense and multiple mods...
Anyway. What I'd be looking forward to after release is some tileset (I like Ironhand), and that's it. Will have to play with ASCII for some time, though. :D

will tilesets not work though?  as far as I know no new icons will be added (unless there's some in the mysterious new demon sites or something) nor should anything else be changing that would affect how tilesets work

Or, you could not use tilesets.
It's much nicer playing without tilesets, because there's no longer things looking like very different things, and you get far more tiles on the screen.
