The Forest is now on early access.  You play the only survivor of a plane crash over a mysterious forest island.  Most of the standard survival elements are there.   You hunt, build, craft, survive, manage energy, warmth, hunger, and health levels, learn about the different flora and fauna to find what's good to eat and what should be avoided.

However, there's another element.  The island is inhabited by tribes of mutant cannibals who have murdered most (all?) of the other passengers and are searching for you.  I don't want to spoil anything about their behavior and AI but it's everything Sir You Are Being Hunted wasn't.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's still on v0.01 so there's a lot missing.  The graphics aren't polished yet and there's some issues that limit the thing described in the spoiler (flesh is very glossy and easy to see) and the caves are a complete mess.  Sound is also very hollow right now, there's no oomph to anything.

Aside from those issues though it's great.  I'm still getting the hang of things so I haven't gotten very far.  Anybody have any stories to share?

Well, not personally. Though Robbaz on YouTube has a video of gameplay footage if people want to watch.

The game does look interesting. I think I often overlooked it because the icon for the game in the Steam Green-thingy was a viney skull that I'd seen in unrelated news articles. Gave the impression of not much effort.

I like the cutting trees down animations. The trunk being slowly cut through is nice detail, plus the inventory screen is quite imaginative.

Do they really need to give a child to the protagonist for the obligatory forced emotional core to the game, getting sick of that shit just give me character customization, the sweet baby jesus of all gaming goodness wept.

Yeah, the kid's a little dumb and I actually laughed at that part.  When you add in the fact that aside from you and the kid the plane is completely empty the whole thing becomes comically absurd.

My biggest complaint right now is that there's no pause feature.

If by pause you mean save...

I was introduced to this via SplatterCatGaming. Unless there's been a patch since his last video, saving doesn't work.

Well no, by pause I mean pause.  The game still runs while you're in the menu or the inventory is open.

Bimp.  There was an update that fixed some of the most glaring issues like cannibals disappearing after a few days.

The save feature works now sort of.  Loading a saved game breaks your inventory, so there's no point actually doing it.

The number one killer is the physics engine.  Be careful around rocks and the leaping cannibals.

Understatement? I saw someone who decided to poke a dead cannibal with a pointy stick, incidentally while standing on the corpse. The explosion of body parts launched him into the air. He did not survive the impact.

This new space program seems interesting.

Okay, be very fucking careful.  Don't sprint over rocky terrain.  Do not get hit by leaping cannibals, and stand well away from corpses if you plan to dismember them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also an exploit, or possibly a bug workaround. The plane axe you find on the, uh, plane, can't normally block, but if you swing it and immediately hold RMB you'll block anyway.  If you find a logging axe that can block any time and looks much cooler.

Kill lizards and wear their skin.  Armor is just a flat increase to HP so you want it a lot.

I've heard the same thing said about this as the Stomping Land, in that they're both cool but not ready for prime time. Couple of hours of "that's neat" and then you hit the end of the content. Is The Forest worth buying at this point?

Isn't that the nature of early access? ie. Don't buy a game if you just want it for fun. Surely there are finished games out there that you can put your money in if that's your goal.
The obvious exception being KSP and probably a few others.

Wanting to support the development is an entirely different angle to take.
