Have soldiers escort civilians

Lets say that you have a security hole somewhere in your fort. Theres a siege or other danger outside, so you cant go outside to fix it. You either need to fix it from inside or leave it there. But for some reason, you can do it from inside; you need to send a mason outside to fix the hole. He will likely die if he is noticed by whatever danger is outside, so you assign a squad to escort him wherever he needs to go. When he is noticed, then the squad will fend the danger off so he can work. This is seen similar to a defend order - the soldiers will not provoke any bypassing potentional threat and will only attack when the creature gets too close to the worker, or when the creature attacks the worker or the soldiers.

This is just one of the many examples where this could be useful, and it may be a bad one, but similar thing could happen to an important dwarf - he needs to do something, and he needs to do it now. But, it is dangerous - he needs to do it, but theres a serious threat outside waiting for him - but you cant afford losing a legendary {insert crucial profession here}. If he gets noticed by it, he will die. So, what if you could send a squad to defend him while hes working?

The best way to demonstrate it to him is take a save of 40 year old fortress with 150 dwarves in it on a good sized embark with a volcano that just breached the circus and install it on his gaming rig and watch it bring his rig to its knees.

seems like a good idea, but something will have to be done about job interruptions from sighting a creature.. maybe you give the dwarf a stop for nothing priority or something.. and if he's too cowardly he runs anyway

You know I'd order the militia to escort my plant-gatherers so they stop running from badger swarms. I approve.

Heck, I'd probably actually run a militia just for that, instead of my usual "if and when something attacks draft all the miners with the pickaxe-wielding uniform" strategy.

Interface-wise, this would be fairly simple... escorting a specific creature is like defending a specific spot, except that the spot moves.  As neblime mentioned, however, the problem would be the civilian bugging out when danger is even remotely close.  The escorted civilian would need to know in some sense that the escort is there to be less prone to bolting.

By the way, there's no reason to restrict this to dangerous civilian work.  A permanent squad order to escort someone is just a bodyguard.  You can make a Royal Guard for your monarch.  Or a tattletale to keep tabs on that suspected vampire.  Or a band of heartless thugs surrounding that moody dwarf who can't seem to find just the perfect shell.

The Royal Guard are already in-game (led by the Hammerer) and do exactly that. In 40d with economy turned on they would follow the tax collector around to protect him.

This can be done via micromanaging but I would be nice to simply have an escort command in the squad menu. We can currently do it manually or we can assign war beasts to the civilian but a nice simple escort command would rock.

As an extension to this suggestion, dwarves with a military escort within sight will not panic from seeing a hostile creature unless said creature moves into an adjacent tile (I think that's fair) or hits them with a ranged attack. Eventually, you could incorporate a system wherein a dwarf's courage makes it more or less likely to panic.

Courage, or rather lack thereof, making dwarves sometimes flee from combat is coming in the next version. That's for military only though afaik, and civilians will most likely still flee at the sight of a wild duck. But the system will be in place by then for when something like this might be implemented.

I could send my own squads to walk with the carts and/or diplomat and prevent an ambush from killing them all.
