I Dun Goofed (AMD Clean Uninstall Utility) - [Solved]
« on: May 30, 2014, 02:49:10 am »

Ended up doing a full system reinstall.
So I did something incredibly stupid the other day and ran the AMD Clean Uninstall Utility in order to update my graphics drivers. It froze my computer part way through and now my computer won't boot. Evidently it must have removed some motherboard drivers or the like. Normally I'd just do a system restore, but unfortunately a boot-time defrag wiped all those out without my notice.

The good news is that I still have command prompt access (no thanks to HP Recovery Manager; I have to sneak in through the offline privacy statement .txt when the Startup Repair fails, which gives me access to notepad, which lets me shift-click and "Open command prompt here".) Through that I have full access to my hard drive and my USB thumbdrive (~512MB.) I figure if I can find out what drivers were uninstalled I can replace them.

Computer is a Win 7 64-bit (forget whether it's Home or Professional) HPE-560z desktop.

Update:
Need help with manual driver installation. See this post.

Try running CHKDSK /f and then trying Startup Repair again.
It may do nothing, or it may be succesful.
Also, did you try running explorer from the command prompt? That should give you your task bar and desktop back.

I doubt that it's trying to boot into the wrong drive, but if you're not sure, while starting up there should be some text on the screen saying "press FX for BIOS"
Usually F8 or F11, I don't exactly remember.

And who knows maybe safemode would work, since it loads only the essential drivers.

Fixing a computer is really just trying stuff until something works.

hell if you are able to get into cmd you can try running SFC /SCANNOW to repair system files.

IDK if you could call it that. It's a remedial version of windows being run from the (x:) drive (which I assume is probably a hidden partition of my HDD) that doesn't have the .dll's to run much.
Spoiler: Large Pic (click to show/hide)
The Recovery Manager window doesn't move and just prompts you to reboot if you press the X. You can see a bit of the "don't go towards the light" recovery background around the edges.

Try running CHKDSK /f and then trying Startup Repair again.

No errors. Also says "Failed to transfer log to event log with status 50." I'll do a /r check next. (Edit: Same thing.)

EXPLORERFRAME.dll missing. I'll try copying it from d: to x: if I can find it and see if that works. (Edit: Nope. Silently fails to run.)

It's the same HDD but different partitions. I think they automatically kick in if the OS partition won't start. No safe mode, only repair and start normally (which I can't select anyways because the keyboard doesn't respond until after it times out and goes to repair. I think USB drivers might be AMD.)

hell if you are able to get into cmd you can try running SFC /SCANNOW to repair system files.
"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."

If you have a computer capable of burning CDs you could try to burn Hiren's Boot CD (you'll have to google this yourself) and attempt to recover from inside Mini-XP. It comes with a bunch of tools, but I'm not sure how useful they'd be.

You could try to finish the driver uninstall and then reinstall them.

Burning it right now. The driver utilities look like they might help. If not, I'll have to see if I can look up the default drivers for my model number somewhere.

Okay, I think I'm very close now. I looked up drivers for my model number and found the original drivers for my model on the official HP website. They're .exe files that won't run at boot because the "subsystem needed to support the image type is not present", but 7-zip was able to extract them like archives. Now I just need to figure out how to manually apply the drivers. The directories are as such:

Chipset Drivers:
Code: [Select]
HPDC764.exe
hpprobar.exe
install.exe
sp51943.rtf
[src]
atipcie.cat
AtiPcie.inf
AtiPcie.sys
AtiPcie64.sys
USBFilter.CAT
USBFilter.inf
[amd64]
USBFilter.map
USBFilter.pdb
USBFilter.sys
[x86] ------------------- 32-bit, probably won't need these
USBFilter.map
USBFilter.pdb
USBFilter.sys

SATA Drivers:
Code: [Select]
HPDC764.exe
hpprobar.exe
install.exe
sp51781.rtf
[src]
amd_sata.cat
amd_sata.inf
amd_sata.sys
amd_xata.sys

There are unified graphics drivers, too, but they're over 100MB worth and I'd rather see if it'll boot without them so I can just run the installer. I'll poke around in the files some more tomorrow, but if anyone has experience in this sort of thing I would greatly appreciate any input (like if I'll need to add registry entries manually or something.)

I can't help you with this, sadly. All I can say is try googling around some more. Sevenforums.com is a pretty good support forum, IIRC.

theres a couple of problems with this, at this point i have no idea if you have safe mode access or not as right now we need to uninstall those drivers and replace the missing ones. I already had AMD scrapped my internal OS browser and reinstalled Windows, I would refuse any customer that expects me to revive their windows like this, its not cost effective. It be easier for me to copy all of the host data out and reinstall.

No safe mode, only mini-XP from Hiren's Boot CD.

Uninstall which drivers? I don't think there are any to uninstall.

I won't have a sufficiently large USB drive to store everything (i.e. all the programs I'd have to reinstall if a full reformat is needed) until the next time I'm at my dad's (he's finally back in town, so maybe next weekend?) (Edit: Not too fond of having to uninstall all that bloatware after restore, though.) It'd actually be more cost effective for me to just throw out the computer, but my other desktop is all the way at my college appt. and I won't be back there until around fall. Consider it an exercise in dwarfiness, I guess.

MiniXP doesn't write changes to the registry and you technically still can't install anything. Lets backtrack to the boot issue, have you attempted to repair the boot sector?

Also, what error do you get when you try to boot into safe mode?

I can also access regedit.exe from the command prompt, but that might have the same issue. How would I attempt a boot sector repair?

There's no option for safe mode.

when you turn on the computer, start spamming the F8 key, if done correctly you should get the Safe Mode menu to the REAL OS partition not the recovery partition.
