At first opportunity, get some cover. I am allowed to move and attack in one turn, right?

Yes, you can move to the barricade cover or the mast in your turn.

Initiative: 18 + 2!

Mila moves two squares north and two squares west. And then twiddles her thumbs because she can't do anything else. activates total defense to increase her AC by 4.

You don't have to move like a knight in chest if you want, you can move up to 20ft in any direction - use the ruler tool in Roll20 to determine your path on diagonal lines - for instance, you can make it to just short of the barricade or behind the nearest mast to provide cover.

Turn will resolve after Fniff posts his action.

(Jeez, I am going to stay way at the back in combat from now on.)
Stay where I am but crawl to the nearest cover and hide... If I can.

Jee wilikers, I think Highmax is near invulnerable, must have been dunked in the river styx like achilles was.
Just make sure he wears a boot.

Well then... Edited my action. Again.

Combat Order: Quartermaster, Mila, Pirates, Caerill, Sailors, Galan, Varg, Pirate Captain.

The pirates move quickly, far more quickly than you expect.  The Quartermaster of the pirate ship draws the first of two javelins from his back and hurls it at Varg, [20! + 4 vs AC 16] [did not miss due to partial cover (20% chance)] striking him dead in the leg and dealing 9 damage.

Varg has suffered a critical hit to the leg.  In addition to bonus damage, his movement speed is reduced by 5ft for the remainder of the encounter, and he suffers a temporary -1 penalty to Dexterity.

The four pirates with longbows drawn take their shots, [11+2, 3+2, 15+2, 10+2] striking down three of the ship's sailors whilst the fourth arrow clangs off the steel framework of the ballista in front of Varg.  The remaining three pirates cross the gangplanks, sabres in hand.  One slashes at Varg [6+1 vs AC16], but misses even his shield by half a foot, while another [13+4 vs AC21] is parried by Mila's defensive flail strokes.

Mila moves comfortably into position, ready to strike against the next foe to approach her.  She expertly fends off attacks from the pirates assailing her.

Caerill climbs behind the best available cover - the wheel of the ship and the body of the (rather obese) helmsman.  [Hide: 3-3] Even behind his oppressive bulk it is obvious you are there, but his dying form, which is still making awkward strangling noises as his guts spill everywhere, will serve as excellent cover so long as you remain prone (75% miss chance from missiles).

The surviving sailors rush to the defense of the ship, more out of fear than anything else.  Two of them gang up on the pirate attacking Varg, [3+3, 8+3] but the pirate is able to evade their clumsy dagger strokes, even though he is flanked on three sides.  The third sailor charges at one of the pirates still clambering onto the ship [Bull rush: 7+2 vs 11], but fails to unseat him.  As the sailor is thrown back by the pirate, the pirate takes the opportunity to slash open the sailor's ribcage [14+1].

At first opportunity, get some cover. I am allowed to move and attack in one turn, right?

You hurl yourself behind the forward mast.  The mast gives reasonably good cover (50% miss chance on a ranged attack), being fairly thick, but not as thick as the main mast.

Varg, your blackguard senses don't detect a single pure-hearted soul aboard the vessel.  You fire off the ballista and hurl yourself behind the cover to the south (firing the ballista is a full-round action, but I'm going to count the move to cover as a 5ft step).  [8 + 2 vs flat-footed AC 13] The Captain barely has time to dive out of the way as the ballista fires, but the weapon is somewhat inaccurate over very short distances.  The actual bolt flies about 10ft off-target (50% hit chance), spearing one of the archer pirates in the process and striking the railings on the far side.  Needless the say, the archer does not make it.

The Captain himself tumbles out of the way and scrambles over to the south gangplank, preparing for the advance.

"Yield and I'll spare your lives!" he calls.

Shout to the captain.

"Terribly sorry for that! I acted rashly, without thinking! Please forgive me, my arcane power is at your service!"

((Bluff check, Galan still doesn't really trust the captain.))

Varg is highly inclined to take the offer, but he's wary.

I'm a mercenary. I'll stop fighting you and even join in your next raid if you hire me. I'm warning you though, if you won't accept my offer and you don't call your men off of me, I'll make sure Aegir has more dead coming for him. And besides, would you want to anger the God of Storms, Sea Passage and Drowning? You even may gain some of his favor on the seas if you hire me on.

Varg tries to hide the desperation in his voice but the odd slip up in his words comes out.

[Bluff: 13] [Diplomacy: 12]

There is a tense moment as both sides hold their blades and bows.  The two surviving sailors, however, seeing half of their number openly offer to defect, drop their knives and raise their hands in surrender.  The captain lowers his sabre.  He nods to his fellow pirates, who lower their bows and approach the survivors.

"Excellent choice.  Hand over your weapons for now - you'll forgive me if I don't trust you with them right this moment.  Go on, hand them over, then you can help us get the cargo up out of the hold.  You're in luck - killing my companions here just freed up some berths aboard the ship."

"*muttered* Kings and knights may die, but the jester lives on. *spoken* Would some medical attentiln be too much to ask? I'm afraid I'm half-dead. Surprising, I know, but that is what occurs when you shoot someone with a billistae bolt."

I just hope you're luckier then my last employer. Getting knocked overboard with a ballistic arrow to the chest would only let him be fodder for the drowned god. I'll remove the barricade so you can get in and out easier and use it to try and patch up that hole I made.

Don't toss weapons until the captain gets on board or I'm on his ship. I'd rather not lose it only to get back stabbed. After all, I JUST fired at the captain with a ballista.

Varg Hravfn, Blackguard of Aegir, now working for...?

"Thank you, gracious Captain. If I might be so bold, what are you known as?"

Give him my nunchucks.

"Please keep them safe, I made them myself."

"And please don't use them for what they look like they should be used for, they are a weapon."
