((It is impossible to sail against the wind, but depending on how the sails are set up on the ship it could be possible to sail close to the wind, and thus outpace the pirate vessel if they can't move as quickly or as closely.

Of course given the fact that we're in a merchant vessel we probably have square sails and thus can't do what I outlined above. Oh well.))

Actually, it can be done. If you turn left, then right, then left again, all into the wind, you get forced forward slowly.

((I know about tacking. The problem with square sails you cannot tack at all. Though we have square sails and they have triangular ones we could possibly outrun them in the opposite direction. AKA with the wind. The problems with that is that we'll probably have to pass close by them at some point, and dump most of the cargo to get rid of excess weight.))

Unless Aegir is suddenly making me a cleric, I can't help you.

Keep reloading while I keep thinking of ways to slow down or stop the other ship entirely. I could aim for their helm but that would be a miracle to accomplish that. Until I find a better target, aim for the sails, specifically a point where the sail meets their mast.

Jee wilikers, I think Highmax is near invulnerable, must have been dunked in the river styx like achilles was.
Just make sure he wears a boot.

(I know it's probably a bad move, but Caerill's also being a bit thick at the moment. He probably should know better, but his "I want to be the guy in charge here!". Note his less then stellar Wisdom score.)

Force the wind! Get the hell out of here!

Oh, and get a swig of vodka, as stressed alcoholic sorcerers are wont to do.


You down some vodka.  [Fort: 6-1 - Failure]  Combined with the stress of the situation and your particularly large gulp, you aren't holding your drink as well as usual - you feel yourself getting a little sluggish. [-1 Dex for this encounter, +1 temporary hp]

Your concentration isn't affected by the vodka, but it is by your heightened state of panic.  [Spellcraft: 3+7] You are barely able to keep together the winds you already have.  The crew shrug their shoulders at your request, one of them shouts "Hey, you're the ship mage!  This is your area, not ours!"

Use my ELITE NAVIGATING SKILLS to turn the ship to fly against the wind... if I can wrestle it off the navigator.

[Diplomacy: 5+6] "Shove off!" says the navigator, as he tries to manoeuvre the ship.  Apparently your plea wasn't quite convincing enough to overcome his own sense of capability.

[Navigator: 13+4+1-8 = -3 penalty] [Gunner: 6+2-3-8] The navigator, unsettled by the interruption, banks the ship too far to the left, throwing the gunner who took Caerill's place off - his ballista shot lands helplessly in the water.

[Navigator: Natural 1!+2 vs ???] Panicking and trying to compensate for the sudden turns, the Navigator pushes the ship too far and one of the lines holding down the sails snaps, throwing the ship out of shape.  Sailors scramble to get the ropes tied back again [4+7], just about managing but far too late.  As the corvette draws up alongside the Maiden it fires off its two port ballistae, [1!+??, 20!+??] the first jamming in the mechanism and causing the spring to violently snap back, taking a chunk out of its operator's throat and leaving the ballista bolt harmlessly in its chamber.  The second fires dead on target, slicing through Caerill's arm, sailing through the Navigator's torso and punching through Lord Physic's gut as it carries him over the side.

Caerill:  Take 6 damage from being savaged by a ballista bolt.

The enemy ship is in position and readying boarding planks.  You have enough time to position yourselves on the ship and then declare what actions you intend to take for the coming round - and to roll Initiative (if you don't I'll roll it for you).  You can't reliably operate the starboard ballista (without firing through your own ship), but the port ballista is loaded and ready, though it will take a full round action to fire it.

Across the water you can see the corvette's crew up close; seven pirates with scimitars drawn (the eighth is choking to death after having his throat cut out by an errant ballista spring), an enormous bare-chested brute of a man at the helm, and a man in a frock coat and plumed hat, sabre drawn, who one could only presume to be the captain.

If the ballista I'm at is the one thats ready to fire, aim at their captain and attempt to negotiate. If I'm not run over there and aim it anyway. My pay just went overboard, so maybe we can figure something out.


Varg shouts at the top of his lungs directed at the captain.

This doesn't have to end in bloodshed. The captain of the ship is either in Hel or will be claimed by Aegir as he drowns in the storm. If you let us all live, you can take whatever is on the ship; I'm not getting paid for this anyway.

Yell at someone to help Caerill.

"Someone get that boy a medic!"

Divert my attention from the wind-guiding. Magic Missile the pirate captain. (Roll ten for Concentration, beats 5 DC for current weather, roll 18 for Concentration, beats 10 DC for ship motion.)

"Time to die, ye sheep-gutted milk-drinkers! Eat the arcane beyond your foolish comprehension!"

((As you can see, Galan likes shouting long rants at his foes like a Bond villain.

I also like to imagine he uses his conductor's baton as a make-believe wand for show and aim.))

The captain, a figure in probably his late twenties with short black hair and slightly tanned skin, gives a roguish grin.

"Told you someone would have some stones amongst them!  That's a fine offer you have there, boy -"

The captain snaps his fingers, and four of the pirates start switching out their scimitars for shortbows.

"- but you have one shot, and I have four - and I can take whatever's on the ship whether or not you live.  Care to rene-"

[Initiative: 3+3 = 6] (Magic missile damage: 3]  Before the captain can finish his sentence, an unerring bolt of force smacks him in the face, bloodying his nose.  He snarls and shouts an order.

"Fire!"

All roll initiative and post actions for combat.

Mila moves two three squares north and four squares west. And then twiddles her thumbs because she can't do anything else. activates total defense to increase her AC by 4.

One shot is ALL it takes

Initative: 11+0 ((bollocks))

When it hits my turn, fire at the captain and detect good (if it isn't passive). If I detect any of the pirate crew as good, don't go after them. After I fire the ballista, draw my sword and shield and get cover behind something.

FIGHT WELL AND DIE BY THE SWORD! KNOCK THEM OVERBOARD IF THEY GET IN! PERHAPS THE LORD OF THE DROWNED DEAD WILL AID US IF WE SEND ENOUGH TO THEIR FATE!

Hide the fact that Varg is panicking by shouting honorable words; he REALLY doesn't want to get thrown overboard wearing scale mail...
