If mites were in DF
« on: May 28, 2014, 09:35:17 am »

I just imagined a normal look at the surface in DF when Mites existed in the game.

Heck, that must have been a mess XD

Mites in DF only leads me to think of elves riding in to attack the fortress on Giant Mites.
Which, by the way, WOULD BE TERRIFYING.

That looks like I imagine a Giant Louse does right as its sucking the essence from my dwarves spines.

Already been covered in the forgotten beast art contest. :D

Here's one 'Tise Mucousdungs', the forgotten beast-- A giant blood sucking mite with red exoskeleton.
(Drew him some time ago-- another MSPaint original submission!)

MSPaint is awesome. I made my avatar in it too.

Though to be fair, MSPaint does not permit transparency, so I *DID* technically put it through paint.net to cull the white background. But the actual image? MSPaint. Pencil tool. :D

What did you do, draw it pixel by pixel?

I am always amazed at the stuff people can pull off. Part of me feels like there is no way anyone can do that but it really isn't all that different from SNES RPG monster graphics, so people obviously can and did.

Psh, mites. If giant sponges can be dealt with, mites won't cause a problem.

Paint is actually pretty good at this. If you zoom in pencil tool draws one pixel at a time.

The block brush is also useful for painting large areas that you want to dither over later-- Paint the base midtone color, then dither color with the pencil tool. The spraycan tool on the smallest brush size setting can be useful for doing random dithers as well, just be careful with it.

But that's OT.

Still, I cant recall if that was a giant mite, or a giant louse based FB.  I think it was a mite.  That would mean that mites are already in the game in some capacity.

People have been drawing pixel by pixel for thousands of years. Takes longer, perhaps, but renders a unique looking product, whatever your medium:

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.
