Alright, 'The Bonny May' it is.

Looking across his bridge, Captain Seepgood reviews his worries.
Fuel is low, only enough for a few more FTL jumps. Probably enough to move about any systems they find, though.
Food is limited. There's enough to feed the crew for a while, but it will run out soon enough.
Medical supplies are good, for now at least. We just have to hope no one gets too sick or injured.
As for the men, their spirit is low. Losing Earth and pretty much everything else has taken its toll.
At the very least we still have our fighters. Those should help us in a pinch.
--
But now is the time for action. Scans report that a populated wold is nearby, but with what they cannot say. Just have to hope they're friendly.
Is there anything The Bonny May needs to do before heading to the planet?

Get the scientists together, and get them working on recreating a blueprint of the combat drones for production.
Have the technicians take a pair of the Escort fighters and begin stripping any non-essential systems from it, removing any extra armor, taking out all but a single weapon, etc. so that we can convert those two into faster recon fighters.
Have the infantry begin drilling in hand-to-hand combat, give them something to keep their minds off of the loss of Earth and many other planets.

Before heading out, Mancomb sets the scientists to work on recreating the Combat Drone plans. They take one of the existing drones to reverse engineer it. This shouldn't take too long.

Next, he gives the technicians two 'Escort' fighters with orders to maximize speed so that we can use them for scouting purposes. They will be done shortly.

Mancomb then sets the commanders to work drilling the infantry in hand-to-hand combat techniques. While it won't have a major use, it will keep their minds off of the recent tragedies.

Finally, the engines are powered and they begin moving towards the nearby world.

Man the weapons with crews. Ensure they can be charged for combat in short order, but leave them uncharged for now - we don't want there to be any accidents.

Maybe have both? So a mouse over Nominal, for example, shows the current HP. The Nominal there is an example of just that.

I now know how to do that, thank you. I'll update in the next turn.

Just to be safe, some of the men are ordered to be on standby at the batteries. They are also to leave the guns uncharged, just so that we don't seem overly hostile.

In a few minutes, The Bonny May reaches communications range with the planet. It belongs to a spacefaring species, as the starports indicate. Oddly enough, there don't seem to be any ships of war in orbit. Moving closer, the ship is hailed by an unidentifiable gruff voice.
State your intentions, and do not move any closer to the planet at this time.
What does Mancomb respond with?

In other news, the scientists and engineers have finished their tasks.

This is captain Mancomb Seepgood of the Bonny May. We come in peace. We'd like to purchase some food and fuel from your planet if that's possible.
Oh, humans? Haven't seen your kind around here in a while. Anyways, our port is stocked with food from the surface and we have some fuel we can spare. Give me a minute and you'll have clearance to dock.  ...  Alright. You should be good. Don't get into any trouble, or the defenses will blow you to pieces.
Acknowledged. Thanks for the help.

Now, with permission to dock, the ship is moved over to the port and is now connected. Searching, Mancomb finds a fuel depot and a rations store. The depot has an automated keeper, but the rations store has an actual person. A K'Ken, to be precise. The fuel is going for 50 credits a unit, and the rate for food is 20 credits for 10 food. You could try to haggle with the storekeeper, if you wanted. There is also a store buying and selling scrap metal a bit further down.

((I'm fine with the third person.))

Buy 250 food (-500 Credits)
Buy 6 Fuel (-300 Credits)
Check the price for scrap metal.

Our scientists and engineers should start studying our weapons cooling. Can we improve that? Flak might be the edge between life and death if we get into battle.

Mancomb first heads over to the depot, and buys 6 units of fuel (-300 Credits). Then he purchases 250 units of food (-500 Credits) and has some of the infantry haul it back to the cargo hold. On the way to the scrapyard, he radios the Bonny May and asks the scientists and technicians to look into the possibility of improving the weapon's cooling system. Reaching the scrapyard reveals an old K'Ken polishing a metallic arm. Reattaching it, he skitters over to Mancomb's party.
Heey, human. What can I get for you? Got plenty of metal I do. I'll also buy scrap off ya, if you're lookin to sell.
How much for a few units of scrap?
You tell me, I'm open to haggling.

I'll give you 100 credits for 100 units of metal.
I'll do it for four.
Four hundred credits? No way. I'll give 250.
350.
275.
Deal! Hand over the creds, and the scrap is yours.
Here. I'll have my crew take care of this. It's been a pleasure.
Likewise.
The K'Ken goes away, 275 credits richer.
Is there anything else to look for while Mancomb is at the port, or is it time to head off again?

The scientists and engineers are still working on the assigned research, and have made some advances.
