Anybody interested in doing a programming jam?
« on: May 23, 2014, 03:55:01 pm »

I have been developing an idea that I thought may be of interest to those on the forums. Basically It would involve running a game/program competition sometime later this year devoted exclusively to ASCII/ANSI/code page 437 games. Since people on this forum are particularly interested in this type of thing (It is the Dwarf fortress and Liberal Crime Squad main forum anyway) I thought It may be a good place to see If people are interested in taking part.

Spoiler: details (click to show/hide)

I have had a number of other ideas and capabilities as well but they are only worth sharing If people want this to become a concrete event.
Are you interested in doing this?

EDIT: Added poll to get an idea of what people want overall

I'd be game. A bay12 programming jam feels like something that should have already happened... maybe it already did. It would be great if it could become a tradition.

Already planning on doing the SFML game jam at the end of the month. Not a big fan of long jams, I'm more of a "either take 2 days and hammer out a prototype" or "take your time and make something properly" kind of programmer. The 1-2 week things are in the weird middle ground for me of too short for real programming, too long for hacked-together-coding.

But I may give it a shot anyway :)

Might give it a shot. I'll hopefully be attending college starting September though so idk if I'll have time when it actually starts.

Well I am actually quite surprised at such a quick turn out, I guess I better get working on the website and my web server then...

As for the length, It can all be changed and while I don't think 2 days Is a bit short somewhere between a week and a fortnight I think Is perfect, but again that Is just my opinion.

As I said under the details one of them Is to make good programs as well as to prove that you can create something amazing quickly :)

Will follow up soon with a more detailed framework.

It is more likely to be earlier august but again It Is a community thing.

Agreed - One to three days is "just right" for a game jam, to me.

Two weeks is just... that's a miserable amount of time for a game jam. I wouldn't really have much more time to spend on a game in two weeks than I would in two days - I have other things going on my life, and a two week game would essentially mean there would be absolutely zero opportunity for clearing enough space from my schedule to work through it. And it would mean any work I did simply wouldn't be competitive with this people who could.

I should have clarified that the 2 weeks was meant that you could have a break In between, but again It Is great to see a response and I will design around the requests of the community

If you had one, I'd have the impetus to look up the basics of games and mangle together two or pieces and have a vague idea about something or other, after I'd done whatever I'd looked up how to do for long enough.  My coding isn't very practiced.

I've got exam season coming, so I won't have time to participate.

I might be in.  Haven't had a lot of energy lately, but I HAVE been in a bit of a gaming lull so it might be a fun thing to do.  If its a console/terminal thing it might be helpful to link some libraries/tutorials.  Unless libtcod counts, in which case I'd just use that.   :P

Can we use existing code of ours? Would we be expected to make our code public?
