Queen Vampire Cerol Sabrebraid has arrived!
« on: May 21, 2014, 03:38:56 pm »

So... I knew the Queen of my dwarven civilization was openly vampiric because of an artifact statue that my dwarves made of her: "The artwork relates to the ascension of the dwarf vampire Cerol Sabrebraid to the position of queen of The Eternal Fountain. (What a name!)"
I was still musing over what this would mean to my fort when she turned up with her entourage!

First of all, I was glad of this because I was worried that the leader position of my fort was bugged out after my first Baron went stark raving mad and was never replaced. Then I started thinking what to do with my newly arrived Dark Queen.

I considered what the dwarves of the colony would think of her. Perhaps the founders of the fortress left their original homes to flee from the tyranny of The Sect of Day, the Queen's eerie religious fanatic elite, or perhaps they were meant to carve out a great temple flowing with blood to feed the ungodly appetites of those same dark disciples. Or perhaps, they were preparing a safe place to hide the Dark Queen away from forces that wished to do her harm, or to protect the innocents of the world from her unquenchable thirst.

I will endeavor to protect the Queen, to feed her and keep her in comfort. She shall rule over The Eternal Fountain from her throne in the Mountainhome of Boltfondles but her guardians shall keep her in check, lest the world fall into darkness and chaos forever.

Okay, I went in-character a bit there...

The weird thing is that I can enable her labours- she arrived with some turned on. Is this normal for a monarch? It does however lead me to a plan:- I'm going to make her some nice rooms, lock her up and feed her on children and otherwise unwanted dwarves. The fact that she can work makes this a lot easier. I had already been preparing some living quarters away from my main fort as I was planning some experiments with a weregecko that I have locked up. These can easily be repurposed. Perhaps later I will have to make her a proper temple of blood, complete with a ritual blood well, and the ranks of her sect can grow further...

TL;DR - I have an openly vampiric queen of the dwarves in my fort. What do?

Your plan sounds fairly good - burrow her in opulent rooms, with adjacent and reachable bedrooms to be assigned to the children, the useless, and the traitors.

Train sacrificial Legendary+5 Weaponsmiths to feed her instead. Feed them to her as soon as they make a lead shortsword artifact.

yes, you can set the preferences to whatever, but they usually spend alot of time with their job as "noble" meaning sitting around doing nothing.

I dunno. I recently got a queen and she did a LOT of cooking and weaving.

..........No sexism intended, that was the skills she arrived with!

Oh, traitors.  I thought you'd said tailors.  No, we need the clothesmakers.  Cheesemakers on the other hand...

Cheesemakers ARE traitors. Why do you think they got sent to tiny, vampire-ridden fortress in the first place.

Anyway. What I think you should do with the Queen is force her 'gift' upon the population! force tham to drink from the nectar of their queen to share in her eternal torment! Or whatever!

Nice, a vampire queen!

I've got a fort running with a puny vampire baron who also acts as manager and bookkeeper. He's got his own four-room suite that serves as his bedroom and office. One of the rooms has a workshop in it (he was a mason) with a little stone stockpile, so I can lock him in that specific room if I ever need to. Attached to this four room suite is a large lever room with lots and lots of levers (more than I could possibly need). Attached to the lever room is a sock & misc garment room so the vampire can replace his socks when they wear out. I generally keep all the doors locked up tight.

Just so that the mortal dwarves can learn an object lesson from his vampiric nature, though, I built the whole complex out of glass blocks and windows. Noble vampires must be put on display at the very least.

I kind of like the idea of a fortress dedicated to the Dark Queen of Blood, though, where you let her run free and if someone important happens to die, well, they weren't in harmonic accord with the cult. I don't know how you'd account for the justice system - you might need to make her the Sheriff or Captain of the Guard, for instance. You might want to research it before dedicating yourself to this route - I'm sure something has been posted about it somewhere regarding forestalling justice.

Let us know what you do with her!

Actually, it doesn't imprison over murders without your say-so anymore. Even if there are 15 witnesses, you can always blame a random idiot cheesemaker.

Aren't nobles [JUSTICE_IMMUNE], or am I imagining a tag?

PUNISHEMENT_EXEMPTION, yes. But I had a vampire king who still ended in prison. Perhaps it prevents the hammering.

Update: The Queen's rooms are under construction and I have my smiths producing a full suite of gold furniture to furnish them (though she prefers sterling silver, I consider it too fiddly to produce). So far the queen has claimed the lives of a boy and a girl who were assigned bedrooms near to the royal chambers. The parents are a bit upset so I might consider trying to limit child sacrifices to one per family.

In other parts I'm also preparing a werecreature infection chamber. This is a walled in retractable bridge atop a room full of cage traps. The test subjects are placed in the chamber and the werebeast is thrown in and the lever puled to retract the bridge. Hopefully this results in the subject being bitten but then dropped to safety before being torn apart completely. We shall see how it goes.

Question: Is it usually or always the case that a vampire monarch will reveal themselves as such? The queens character is a dark red Ñ rather than the usual dwarf symbol.

please keep in mind that vampire dwarves keep slowing down indefinitely due to never drinking booze. You might wish to do some modding to alleviate it if you plan to have your vampire queen up and running for some time

What modding has to be done, exactly? I'm curious.

I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable enough to answer it competently, but perhaps modding the vampire interaction so that it does not add [NO_DRINK] tag mights help. Alternatively, you could try making vampire interaction remove the [ALCOHOL_DEPENDENT] tag, which I think causes the problem.
Then there is another question of whether any of these changes would require a regen to come into effect.
