[Silly and Absurd: RPG classes, and their skill trees.]
« on: May 21, 2014, 11:31:45 am »

Hi all,

So I have a game for you.

Basically, you need to suggest a skill, ability, or spell that would make a character class from an RPG game, e.g. a Mage, become amusingly useless, incompetent, or silly and absurd.

Examples:

Mage: Spell. The target of this spell gets an uncontrollable case of the munchies.

Bard: All the bards combat moves are dance-off style ''diss'' moves.

Thief: Can only pickpocket from friendly characters

Classes I have so far:

Mage
Monk
Warrior
Thief/Rogue
Bard
Merchant
Ranger
Actor

EDIT: Moved from General Discussion, and attempted to turn into a forum game.

Thief:  Had both his hands chopped off because he stole some bread.
Warrior:  Can't find work because he was crippled in the last war.
Ranger:  Can feed himself in the woods, but suffers from social anxiety.
Merchant:  Taxed excessively by the king.
Monk:  Can meditate to achieve inner piece, lives a life of poverty.
Mage:  Street magician, no real magic.

Haha thanks guys I like them, they're great. Keep 'em coming.

I'm especially looking for suggestions regarding class skills and abilities, rather than their character specifically.

So, like silly/useless artifacts on FG&RP?

I'mma give it a shot.

Sense Foreboding
Magically sense a foreboding aura of fear. Novice mages usually cast this unconsciously through insecurities.

Kiaaaaaaaiiiiii!!!
Monk technique that requires shouting out as loud as possible to increase combat abilities. Overdoing it tends to make the opponent recover from the initial shock of suddenly shouting at them, assuming they're affected at all, for a boost in awesome combat credits.

Combat Technique: Naming your strikes
A universal combat technique that boosts your ego, assuming your ego is still intact as you shout the name of your attack instead of actually dealing damage.

Wow I didn't think to look in FG & RP for inspiration - thanks! Some of those can be mined and twisted to fit character classes.

And yes, kind of like that.

The final aim is basically to have a RPG that's like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, or Hero Yoshihiku and the Demon Kings Castle -  meets D&D style RP'ing.

I like the Kiaaaaaaiiiii!! suggestion a lot!

I heard it actually does, but I don't want to start talking about crotch-kicks now.

Actually, the manouever does work on women. Just because the bits aren't visibly dangly doesn't mean they aren't dangly at all. Or susceptible to damage. Or extremely painful if damaged.

Ranger can make animals extremely angry. Thief can only pickpocket party members. Merchant has to specialise, and all the options are overly specific.

Hitting people in the groin moves their pelvis out from their centre of gravity, causing them to fold like a poker player in a game I know nothing about.

It'd make it less funnier, if you think about it. But yeah I suppose it's true. Could be changed to "works on women, surprisingly enough."

Thanks Arx I like your suggestions, the Thief one especially.

Yeah the male/female 'Nad Breaker stuff is noted guys, don't worry.
I figured as much anyway, I knew a girl who got ''c**t punted''. In her words. She said it was excruciating.

But anyway, anyone have any suggestions for thieves and warriors? I'm struggling to think of many weird, incompetent, or silly abilities for them to have.

If I can't think of any, I might remove those classes.

Also: Should this be moved to FG & RP, or is it okay here?

If this is for a forum game or some project brainstorming, it might be worth to consider putting it on creative projects.

I'm just going to recommend 8-bit theater for inspiration.

And second creative projects.

Thief: Can only use backstabs to attack. As in, is physically unable to attack enemy from anything but behind.

Warrior: Must engage any enemy upon seeing them - no such thing as standing your ground.

Thanks - I like both of those Scrdest, that'll make the classes a bit more unique too!

And to be honest it could be a forum game, i'd certainly prefer it if people have some amusement while helping me by providing suggestions, but it's not really a creative project, yet anyway.
