If the game ever makes other races playable/controllable in Fortress Mode (Which I believe is planned), then you're no longer playing Dwarves, so how can it be called Dwarf Fortress!?!? :O

As it stands right now it is possible to mod the other races to be playable in fort mode. I don't know how well it works out though.

It depends on the extent of the modding done.  You can very quickly play as humans with all the dwarf nobles/buildings but there are more in-depth race mods out there with custom mechanics, reactions, buildings, ect. MWDF currently supports Dwarves/Warlocks/Orcs/Gnomes/Kobolds with its release version and there is at least one more race being worked on currently.

I'm not talking about mods, specifically. If the name of the game needed to be changed after the mods, then I know of a franchise that would be called "The Elder Scrolls: Nude Amazonian Hermaphrodites".

But I believe I heard somewhere that Toady intends on making captured or otherwise sapient creatures (Like animalmen and elves and such) somewhat able to be 'tamed' and controlled by your civ. I know I've had an elf or a human show up as the king once or twice, and I would like to be able to assign my gigantic-ass castle to the King without hacking or modding the game.

Then if you can do it for specific units, what's stopping you to make an entire fortress from them :O

The name Dwarf Fortress has a lot of recognition and it sounds cool.  I hope someday you can play other races, but who cares if the name stays DF.
