But neither of them have that sweet sweet potential that makes dreams come true.

This is why I dislike extensions, what little differences there are between weapons, it just erases them. In Blue Burst weapons in the same category could have very different attack patterns, a different amount of hits in their combo, you could have swords that shot out projectiles from basic attacks...

None of that is here and it makes me sad. The only difference between weapons in categories now is a few numbers.

It's a lot less uniqueness and a lot more numbers/stat boosts yes I agree. I do like what they did with extensions myself, making your choice of weapon more flexible (but ultimately limited to what potential you really want, preferably 10+ star weapons). Sort of wish they'd implemented transfering item looks as well.

Still my biggest gripe with loot compared to pso is the absolute abundance of it. In EQs there's rares dropping faster than  you can loot them, I wouldn't really call that rare but that's just me.  :P

So many potentials are mediocre too. Although there are a few incredible ones. While its nice that if there's just one particular weapon you want, you can use it the whole game and be effective, I feel like that would have been even better if most weapons were unique in some way. Different ranges, different attack patterns, number of shots per attack...

Even out the damage, fine. But differentiate them SOMEHOW.

Hey everyone! Facing near-constant pressure from unnamed sources to give this a whirl, I got hooked about last week after a mining defense EQ. I went ahead and joined the team, too. Sorry I haven't been saying anything to anybody; I was too intimidated by the pros among you afraid of retribution for not playing certain other games waiting to become stronger because I really don't want to bug anyone with weak lowbie monkey-shooting quests. My ID is Mithelis, character name Milis.

See you all around!

I don't really think any of us are pros. We just argue about numbers a lot because the game is A Phantasy Star Game in Japanese no less and Phantasy Star has inscrutable weird mechanics under the best of times and this is not the best of times.

That being said, two has a lot less wacky arcane mechanics than Blue Burst. Actually makes me a little sad.

Just won the Dark Falz Loser fight on VH for the first time. Decided to try my Volg Raptor theory. I just-attacked Volg Raptor onto the clock and then rained Sacred Skewer on his head repeatedly for thousands of damage on the clock. Took me all of 2 minutes to annihilate the clock at most, the fight ended relatively quickly after that. Also, I found out there are multiple 8 star and 10 star weapons with a potential that boosts guard stance's effectiveness by 3% and increases you damage while in guard stance by !!25%!! Once I get that potential unlocked, I'll have to do some damage tests to see if Volg Raptor double-dips into that bonus like it does for just attack ones.

Updated the skill sim link in the OP, hosting went down. If it wasn't working earlier for you, it should be now!

So I'm interested in this, should I attempt the patch, or that official english version I heard about?

First off! If you're not in southeast asia, you'll have to use a proxy to get through to the SEA version. If you have an option, and care about translation in the slightest, go japanese. Southeast asia is IP blocked outside of southeast asia I think, and the translation is hilariously bad. Forces are Wizards, monomates are potions, it just completely kills any flavor the game had, which is sad because the game does it very well.

Does Tool mastery apply to Weak Bullet? What is a Stylish roll?

Also the Force tree makes me weep, the Ice tree is so massive its eating all my points T_T That PP charge revival sounds so nice, but I can't spare 11 points to grab it without cutting into to my ice mastery or photon flare and getting some crummy fire levels

Sometimes I wish you could just subclass your main class and give up the ten bonus points from quests. I would definitely do that on my force.

No, get Charge Revival.  It really and truly makes the class.  You think a force is good now?  Wait until your average rate or spellcasting is 2-3x faster because you're recharging PP while charging your spells.  With Na Megid as my main cast, it takes 60 PP to cast, and with my rod's boost I've got about 38 PP recovered by the time the 6 second chargup is done.  That's a bit under 9 seconds per drop of like 10k damage, so I somewhat easily maintain over 1k DPS, from the back row, on any spot I can get a clear lock onto once.

Yeaaah I had that idea in the back of my mind myself. Long cast time isn't such a big deal when you can recover PP and customize to increase its power 1200%. I wish I'd had the skill planner a few days earlier, I might have skipped photon flare entirely if I knew I wouldn't have the points to max it. But now I have the first skill maxed. And resets cost AC T_T. I can still fit it in by sacrificing the rest of the flare skills though, I think. Won't be able to take element conversion sadly.

Still. I'm curious what Photon Flares status boost would do combined with freeze ignition. It really sucks that you can't max Ice and Photon flare. There are literally not enough points with every single point in them.

Sometimes these skill trees make me cry.

Photon Flare has been described as better in early game.  The big problem is the 30 second duration and the flat bonus.  There are weapons with the potential to boost photon flare, so you get even more T-ATK while using them, but it seems like such an iffy bonus, and one that you really have to work to get anything out of.  The short duration and long cooldown ultimately put me off.  I'd adore the T-ATK boost if it were longer, or even if it were shorter (only takes me 6 seconds to cast) but has no/shorter cooldown.  Even really if it were "the next attack you perform has more T-ATK behind it" that'd be amazing.

But as it stands, I'm working on my charged skills, so it'll do more damage when fully charged.  After all, when you're casting Na Megid as your heavy hitter, and it's got a 6 second cast, waiting the bit extra to let it fully charge isn't a significant problem.

At this point it seems like you're just gonna have to make the best of photon flare. Consider ways you can make that boost more useful, without taking away from your end goal, whatever that may be. A hybrid, for instance, might be able to make a bit better use of photon flare to get a brief spike in tech damage. That sorta thing.

Failing that just getting a rod/Talis/Wand that boosts photon flare probably wouldn't be a bad idea.
