So like, hypothetically...
« on: May 18, 2014, 04:29:11 pm »

If I wanted to sprinkle magma on my soldiers to burn their nerves and fat and make them fireproof and painless...

How would I go about that?

I don't recall which thread it was, exactly, but somewhere on these fora is a how-to on creating magma mist in sufficient quantities to melt fat, but not so much as to set beards on fire.

Happy hunting!

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Yes, but it requires a great deal of care.  The secret, as I understand it, is to expose your Dwarf(s) to just enough magma mist to melt the fat, without starting a fire.

This. Sounds. Impossible.

It may have actually happened to a few of my corpse dumpers recently, but I doubt I could replicate or prove it.

But I killed 6 dwarves doing it, and that wasn't even INTENDING to do it, so OP, you're out of your miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiind!

The magma bath, or mist, would be to burn the child to remove all the fat, thus making them flame-retardant.  It's the burning fat that mostly hurts a flaming dwarf, the stuff melts and hurts.  Controlled burning and removal can be used to make a dwarf slightly more flame-resistant, and more importantly, char off things like facial features and skin.  These are not dwarves.  These are weapons.  Their appearance is not to be related to anything natural or good.  Think of the Immortals in 300.  And ideally, there would be no workshop.  If there was, it'd be a craftsman shop, to fulfill any stoneworking, woodworking, or boneworking mood.

I think it's this thread :)

It was possible back in version 0.31, when the only thing magma did was heat things up. In 0.34, however, it's pretty much guaranteed to instantly set stuff on fire...

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Back in 40d, I once saw a dwarf in steel boots run through a single tile of shallow magma without taking damage.

I have never yet been able to replicate this.

OP sounds insane but you have to admit, this is exactly the kind of logic a dwarf would apply to the situation.

Small doses of magma to build up an immunity.

I remember this being discussed in the Dwarven Child Care thread; first mention here.  Searching the thread may yield more results.
