That no matter the pc you have. DF will bring it to its knees. Yeah. Simple waves on an ocean causes massice amounts of lag same with having 2 natural waterfalls + 1 dwarf made along with 3  natural rivers + 1 dwarf made.

I think this game is designed to teach you that you shouldn't worry about living creatures unless they're somehow useful to you. It scares me.
Also:
The worst enemy you'll ever meet is the little voice that says Hey, this would be a cool/awesome/funny thing to do!/I wonder what happens if...

That you should not feel bad about people that rob you for food, as they'll come back and wreck you place... Fucking kobolds...
Also, not to trust enviromentalists, they will also try to wreck your place.
Also, not to accidentally punch someone of your same species in the face, as it will escalate to a full scale civil war that will decimate your population and wreck your place.
And that everything can happen at any moment and wreck your place.
And also a lot of cool underground amphibians.
And that I love olms... Unless they are giant.

My second turn's unnoficial goal was to turn everyone into vampires, and it backfired so bad, I ended up making the fort a more efficient, safer and friendlier place.
Apparently they evolved a taste for everything I love and care about

I learned that everyone that plays Dwarf Fortress for a long time either turns into a psychopath or was already one.

Geology, medieval weaponry, and steel making. Oh, and how to read ASCii.

Also taught me how to manage a fort of psychopathic alcoholic short people. Also taught me how to plan a fort for psychopathic alcoholic short people.

Also this thread taught me about thrips.

DF has taught me that wielding babies while under attack is an effective defensive measure.  That's a bit of information that might have came in handy had I ever been mugged before the kids were too big to carry :D
