How hostile do you make your worlds?
« on: May 17, 2014, 05:42:12 pm »

Hello all.

i have recently just got a new computer and thus lost my old worlds (well upgraded my computer...same deal) and lost my 'good' world gen.

Now I always go with the 129x129 genned region map with changes to how many semi mega/mega beasts and a load of titans (over 150 titans and 500+ of each of the others) and gen for 500-1500 years, most of the time it's still in Age of Myth and results in some fun later game encounters.

Now how do you all generate hostile worlds for later game !FUN!? Would be interesting to see.

When generating an evil world, I aim for a hostile environment, as opposed to hostile critters/beasts.

Spoiler: Evil Woods example (click to show/hide)

I turn off vampirism, since they're easy to exploit; I also turn off werecreatures, since they're far too easy to deal with as a rule - and each time a werelizard turns up, it's one fewer Giant or Cyclops that could have spawned instead.

Personally, I find that evil woodland biomes are the toughest, as they tend to spawn more undead flyers than say, a tundra.  <----not scientific; just anecdotal.

I've been at this for almost 6 months and I'm still not "ready" to start in a hostile environment. Each time I play I make sure I can overcome all obstacles with ease before I attempt any new challenges. One day I would love to run a Fortress in a hostile environment and watch it sustain with me issuing just basic commands. I can barely get my military organized. All in time.

I have custom races I mod into mine to make the world more deadly - primarily manamaids, scythod, holistic spawn. Then I have my radiation mod, which makes most dwarves (and everything else) sick. Blood trails are common:

Then I usually custom gen to make there be about... 10x as many evil zones. (I also bump the total race count by 2 to 3 times.)

So... very hostile, but very modded, for me.

I just stick the world gen to Savage. That helps a lot when you have modded in dinosaurs, because they are everywhere if you do that.

Mmm...modded in dino's..that sounds like fun. Where can one find this mod? I would like to try it out for myself, I have always wanted to do something along those lines.

Deadly creatures I'm usually okay with.  Deadly environments, to me, are either overly annoying (zombification) or overpowered (evil clouds & husks).

I once managed to make the whole planet nearly a single biome and have that biome be in the neutral evil-savage evil range throughout.  Then tried to make an aboveground fortress.  Didn't last very long.

I'm curious, if you happened to notice: how did other civs fair? I can't imagine elves coping too well with thralled elephants or whatever knocking on their wooden doors, and it's not like they can hide underground...

They all spawned in the few instances of biomes under the 'neutral' portion.  They wound up filling very rapidly.
