The Great War: Mission 2, Return from Hiatus
« on: May 17, 2014, 01:12:18 am »

What RTD hell is this, I hear you ask?

td:lr: A WWII action RTD, with plenty of explosions. And pictures.

Welcome to the alternate timeline World War Two, where Operation Unthinkable was acted out. You know, that operation, the one where Allied forces planned to invade Soviet-Occupied East Germany in order to scare the Soviets into submission?

It didn't work. Now both sides are back at war, only a year after Japan was annexed by America. On that note, the nuclear bomb was never invented (otherwise moscow would be an irradiated shithole right now).

What you'll be doing:

Anyhow, one lucky player controls a general of a chosen division in their chosen faction, with other players playing either lower class officers controlling squads, infantrymen, artillery operators, tankmen or cooks. Pretty good so far, right?

Now here's where it gets cool: updates will come with pictures displaying the situation. I'm physically playing out the scenarios in the Men of War Editor, which allows me to actually play around with your scenarios. Your dumb actions can and will get you and your squadmates killed by the game's AI, however, rest assured the game will play by rolls first and AI second.

Here's the laydown on the GUI:

Spoiler: GUI (click to show/hide)

What you see here is:

Units:
On screen is a US Officer and a M4A1 Sherman, the standard US battletank of the day. They'll be moved around as needed.

Infantry can take cover, lie down, crouch, take shelter in buildings, set up defensive structures, and make traps.

Tanks can drive around and shoot shit.

The Map:
Top left corner. The dots are where people are. The arrows signify vehicles. It gives a general overview of the terrain.

Inventory:
Shows what people are carrying around. Limited to the size of the grid, which is still a damn lot. Vehicles can hold a lot more things.

The Factions:
Allies

The Western World. Consists of all the old friends, now with Japan, which has been reluctantly roped into the operation.

The Pros: Good equipment, good tanks, and good numbers. The all rounder.
The Cons: As all rounders, they don't have a specialty. Or a bonus.

Russians

Mother Russia and it's slave states. It has the same borders as Soviet Russia, minus their territory in Germany.

The Pros: Numbers. Tons of tanks, plenty of conscripts.
The Cons: Shitty equipment, low rationing.
Bonus: Starts with an extra infantry and vehicles.

New German Republic

A German splinter faction, they fight everyone to restore Germany back to its previous state. They aren't Nazis though, just nationalists.

The Pros: Advanced weapons, Excellent tanks.
The Cons: Very few in number.
Bonus: Starts with 50% more ammunition and better weapons. Access to advanced combat abilities.

How to Play

Simplified:

The general receives orders from High Command. He then relays his orders to his troops, and they'll attempt to complete the objective.

Complex:

The General:
Chosen from the Officer pool at the start of each mission. He'll choose the weapons, the troops, the vehicles, the abilities and the positions everyone takes. He then acts as a commander, telling his troops where to reinforce/attack. However, he can lead a force if he feels like it.

He also can call a retreat (if applicable), letting everyone still alive to leave the mission before everyone dies.

Officers:
Basically generals on the smaller scale. You can control either PC or NPC infantry of your choice, as well as having access to special, map dependant abilities (like air strikes, or reinforcements).

Infantry:
Listen to your commander, and complete your mission. Easies. There are several classes:

Anti-tank man
Flamethrower
Medic
Machine Gunner
Rifleman
Submachine Gunner
Sniper
Ranger*

*Promotion only

Vehicle Operators:

Tank drivers. Ship captains. Artillery Operators. All the fun, explosive stuff. You're useless when you don't have a vehicle, though.

After you choose a class, vote for the faction we play as in the poll up top. Any officers, if you want to apply for generalship, make sure you say so. You'll be chosen by dice roll.

Dice: 1d6, as per the norm.

EDIT:

Have some pictures.

Spoiler: Eye Candy (click to show/hide)

Dice rolls. I'll let the game sort out any idiots though. For example, if you run out and try to punch a tank, you'll die in very short order. Taking a potshot, however, will be decided by dice roll.

Also, choose a faction.

What is this? A beta for a video game or some sort of extremely convoluted roll to dodge?

Herr Hauptmann! Gefreiter Martin of the Gebirgsjäger reporting for duty!

Ah ok, so we're all on the same faction? (Darn.)
Heh, Gefreiter is a rank, (corporal-ish).

Alternates:
Corporal Martin, flamethrower, Allies.

Sergeant Volkov, Medic, Soviets.

I can't really make the game work if everyone's on different factions.

Comrade Boris Mikhailvich, sergeant of the Red Army, reporting for duty.

((My vote goes to the Soviets. If the voting results in a different faction, I'll use a different character.))

Looks awesome. Officer Conrad Kamin, voting for NGR. I'll apply for generalship, 'cause what the hell.

What's your player cap going to be?

I tend to not have one. These battles might have upwards of 200+ NPCs, so it doesn't really matter anyway.
