Blank Plays: Unreal World RPG
« on: May 16, 2014, 03:11:41 pm »

I begin an adventure in Unreal World! Which is a brilliant survival based Roguelike game. Now I am no expert at this game and I will make mistakes, so expect me to die in some really moronic ways. Like drowning whilst setting up my nets or something.

Still I make my first character known as Blank of Owl-Tribe, focus heavily on my dodge and bow skill (even though we didn't start with one) and go the route of being a fisherman! So let's see if I can make it past first winter.

Blank Plays: Unreal Word - Episode 1 - Blank Of Owl-Tribe

The Unreal World RPG website describes the game as such: " UnReal World, or UrW, is a unique graphical roguelike RPG taking place in the Far North long, long ago. It brings you a realistic game world rich with historical atmosphere in which northern folklore, knowledge and way of life play an important part. The atmosphere and game features are highly original and compelling. The world of the game is based on the ancient Finland in the late Iron Age."

Also if you are interested in giving the game a go you can find it here: http://www.unrealworld.fi/urw_downloads.html

Active fishing is pretty bad, however not entirely useless, a well trained fisherman with a rod can do okay for himself, even when ice fishing. I would say better than actively tracking and killing stuff. However picking the fisherman let's me cast nets so I can catch fish whilst working on other stuff at my camp whilst the nets do the work for me.

Actively hunting and not trapping only works when you stumble across something and thats rare. Trapping is the way forwards as well as harvesting stuff from the environment as you travel.

oh yea using nets to catch fish for you seems like it would be a good way to supplement you diet, but so far you have just failed at active fishing... after looking it up it's spear fishing that's the bad one, or club fishing which is worse.

also I nearly for got to mention the most important part:

Da dun dun dun  Da dun dun dun Da dun dun dun...  :P

Getting some fish to bolster your nutition as you feast on berries might still pay off...
I started playing this again about a week ago, which is interesting.
I think that you could not see the shelter requirements because you were trying to build it in a direction that you could not see. Cellars are pretty easy to make too, they just involve a lot of wandering around collecting rocks.
Tracking seems unnecessarily tedious. The game could really use an autotracking feature so that you can find tracks without manually spamming the skill, the option to zoom in on tracks that you find in the overland view, and probably more tracks to find in general. I pretty much always find the animal before I find its tracks...

Starving to death now takes a couple months, and you learn how to fish better the more you do it.  So if you're committed to it, then you'll eventually learn how to fish reliably before you starve to death, at which point you can do stuff other than fishing constantly.

That said, you've got to be somewhere that you can catch pike.  Or you probably will die.

So I have trouble with literally everything, from hunting to operating a sauna. I will beat this game through incompetence even if it kills me!

Blank Plays: Unreal Word - Episode 2 - Stags and Saunas

So I start my pilgrimage to the Driik territory to find my self a shovel, I just seem to mess everything else up along the way. However I am still alive and repetitively well fed so for now things could be a lot worse!

Fortunately I am at a place where pike seems to dwell so I've got lucky! Though you are right, I think people forget that with time you can become quite the efficient angler!

Active fishing is terrible, passive fishing is AMAZING.

Three nets can last you forever easily.

That's why I'm holding onto my two nets for now, if I happen to come across an amazing place to live, with good resources and water source. At that point I will cast out (hopefully with a raft of some sort) and start fishing on mass!

It may well be impossible to make a javelin without a better tool. However you were extremely fatigued and possibly making more than one javelin which(I do not actually know) might influence it.
Fatigue goes away over time if you are not doing anything strenuous, you do not need to sleep it off. Sleep is predominately for the thing that says weary or tired or lively or whatever.
Hunting stags is predominately about following them until they get exhausted or trapped by terrain. chasing them towards water is probably about the only thing that will help with this, otherwise just chase them forever... Also, When you encounter an animal on the overland map and automatically zoom in, you will be facing it. And you can zoom out with, umm, 'control -' I think, it should tell you on, umm, F1 or question mark I think, which has two pages, I didn't notice the second page for a while...
Oh, and I think heavier food rots faster, ad cooks slower, so I generally cook heavy fish first sand eat light fish first.
You can probably build a wooden shovel without too much trouble, and wooden bowls can hold water.

so I had this really weird Idea around the time you got woken up in the night.
someone should make a historically inaccurate caveman mod for this game, here you are wandering around the woods or you get woken up in the night and instead of a squirrel or something BAM tyrannosaurus for no good reason.

maby it's the tribal drums or maby I just watched too many of those old b movies as a kid, and hey there is magic in the base game so all cries of historical accuracy are already moot.

Ehh, magic is not completely ridiculous. It basically comes down to performing rituals that make the things that you were doing anyway work a little better. This sort of experimentation will, through the process of evolution, gradually veer towards producing some positive behavioural variation. I mean, is it really so strange that throwing meat into the water after catching fish results in more fish loitering in the region?

you know I'm actually not inclined to argue against the existence of magic in the real world, it's the kind of argument where even could you win you still end up losing. besides the world is a far more interesting place with some questions left unanswered.

Largely my attitude also. I don't rule it out, it just isn't something that I can rely upon...
