Should I update my Mac to Mavericks?
« on: May 15, 2014, 10:30:22 pm »

Disclaimer: I'm not in a very economically stable or well off position so updating my hardware or getting a PC aren't options that are open to me.

So I'm currently running on Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and have been for some time now. I like it well enough and never really intended to upgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion at any point since I'd heard bad things about them.
Thing is, though, less and less new stuff (read: games) supports 10.6.8 and it's becoming a bit of a pain to see a game I'm interested in requires Lion or something and I can't play it despite meeting other system requirements. So along comes Mavericks, which I've heard good things about (so far) and piques my interest. It's just that I'm not entirely sure that upgrading is a smart idea. My mac is fairly old and doesn't exactly have primo specs. It runs what I want it to run well enough but it's sort of sitting on the bar and I feel like upgrading will put a bit more strain on than it can handle.
I'd also heard that DF has trouble running in Lion; is this a problem that has persisted into Mavericks?

So based on this would it be worth updating?

OSX after Snow Leopard eats up ram like candy so before you update i recommend buying some new ram chips, there is a huge performance boost but you need that ram. From what i can tell you have a 2008 version so your maximum is 6gb, go buy some crucial sticks and give that baby some more breathing room. My buddy has a 2011 model, went from 4gb to 8gb it was night and day.

edit: and of course its DDR2 so by all means that will be expensive. I wouldn't do it, maybe upgrade your ram to 4gb but do not give it Mavericks.

The newer systems don't support core 2 duo processor so you literally don't have to option of upgrading
