Moleweasels and Frill Lizards are the cats of Masterwork, they both help get rid of vermin.

Just wanna throw it out there that "drake" means "male duck" and is not masterwork specific, you can get ducks as livestock from vanilla embark. They also happen to be pretty useless, since turkeys are much better for eggs.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Except not in this context.  Drakes, in MW, are small dragonlets.

Oh, well that's really confusing.

You're going to want most of the things that are listed under the miscellaneous tab: trade licenses, crates of metal, boxes of feathers, etc.  Just be aware that they can be obscenely expensive.

Doooh I should have grabbed those. Stupid lizards are eating all my food.

I'll make sure to grab some turkeys next time.

Drake usually refers to a dragon in video games, or a rapper around here.

This thread is tremendously useful.

I use Masterwork. I might not know if a feature is mod specific because I'm a noob.

I thought one of the things MW did was rebalance the various egg laying creatures so they weren't so broken.

It does, yeah. They spit out far fewer eggs than in vanilla.

Definitely get things that you either haven't naturally found, or can't get yourself. I'd suggest some glass in case of a tantrum, and when it comes to animals, just remember these three. Alpacas, cats, and turkeys. These are the most efficient animals in the game, in my opinion. I'd also say that if you start a map with a very high mineral spawnrate, definitely get some steel or steel items, because you're unlikely to make it yourself naturally.
As for selling items, crafting wooden spiked metal balls is so ludicrously broken that you can achieve considerable gains, and walk away with more or less the entire caravan.

Anvils are one of the cheapest and best sources of iron and steel, order lots.
I've heard this more than one place, but I thought I saw iron/steel bars are something like half the cost of anvils of the same material (and, of course, require half the charcoal to turn into something else, as anvils have to be melted)... Am I mixing up embark points with trading or something?

I have an idea. Let's play a game where you win by being as quiet as possible.
I get it, it's one of those games where losing is fun!
I spend most of your dimension's time outside of your dimension. I can't guarantee followup or followthrough on any comments, ideas, or plans.

Magma Furnace and each anvil = 3 bars.

Wait, does the smelter being magma powered affect the melt return rate?

For an egg layer, get some Bearded Cavernkeets. You can sheer them for wool. Also the Drakes in MW are shearable, for a more durable leather. Also they are war trainable. For *MOST* of the other animals, look to the Deeper Dwarven Domestication mod, found here.

Meph has fully incorperated that mod into MasterWork.

No, it just doesn't cost you any charcoal... and for some reason I thought Anvils were a 1:1 create/melt rate.  The wiki says no.  I haven't paid that much attention to them in a while, apologies.

I always order gypsum plaster unless I have gypsum, as that's helpful for proper medical care.

Same here.  It's one of the things that I can almost never produce locally.

As far as animals, I don't play masterwork,

Me either.  Can't even try it, as they apparently have no Linux version.

Quote
As far as non birds go, I like pigs and dogs.  Dogs are dual purpose since they're trainable, but pigs can be milked, and I like having a cheese making industry.

Yes!  Pig power!  Non-grazers are always the best.  Well, in vanilla at least.  I don't know what MW might have changed.

Quote
I also always buy all their wood, and usually order more, because you can never have enough wood.

Wood from caravans is ludicrously cheap -- like 3 or 4 urists per log (in vanilla).  I always order each type of wood they have available, and buy all that they bring.

In addition to gypsum powder, pigs and wood, I like to order bars of military-grade metals (bronze, iron, steel, etc.), silk thread and cloth (harvesting webs is dangerous work), leather (ridiculously cheap and plentiful compared to local production in vanilla), coal/charcoal, and bolts.  If they bring cheap bolts (plain copper/bronze, or maybe one level of quality) then I'll buy them.  I don't buy the 2400-urist gem-studded silver ones, though.

Obviously any trading plan will depend on what your map has in terms of resources, and what kinds of industries you plan to set up.
