Author Topic: What are some good things for a nub to request from a caravan?  (Read 2248 times)

I got my first caravan and grabbed a couple anvils in exchange for my overpriced mugs. I got some seeds, but I'm sure I'll have more stuff to sell next year now that I have 3 Urists making legendary mugs. What should I request?

Cloth, leather, and probably some pet animals like dogs, sheep, or alpacas. Really it depends on what your fortress wants to specialize in making (if not everything; take a look at what natural resources you're digging up). You can never have enough cloth when it comes to making clothes, especially as the first ones your dwarves show up with start wearing out and they begin tantruming because they're naked.

Clothes actually become a very good trade good to have around if you make enough to get yourself legendary tailors, dyers, and weavers. Just sell off the dyed exceptional or masterwork clothing and you can purchase just about anything from any caravan.

Any raw materials you can't find on your embark are usually pretty good to prioritize.  If you didn't bring any particular type of animal, especially non-grazers, they're generally a good bet.

Cloth is good, but it's also pretty much the only thing the Elves are good for (beyond live-fire practice).  Silk, on the other hand, is only traded by Dwarves, and so makes a decent request.

If your embark is short of trees, or you've not yet tapped magma, then lumber and coal are solid bets.

Meats and cheeses are easy to turn into roasts for HUGE profits.

One thing that I prioritized getting from the second dwarf caravan to arrive was a turkey hen and turkey gobbler. You would not believe how great it is to have a completely manageable and renewable staple food source such as eggs in addition to your constant stream of plump helmets. They're a little bit tricky to get right at first, but eggs are a wonderful thing to have. Nest boxes would also be good to pick up from the caravan but you can make them yourself out of anything except bone.

I'm looking through all these available pets, and it's taking me ages to look all these up since many of them aren't real-life animals.  Are turtles, bats, lizards, or drakes any good? I'm so sad, the trader isn't offering to bring cats. Does that mean I'll never be able to get cats this game?

Are you using a mod?  Dwarves don't usually have bats, lizards, drakes, or turtles for trade.  Except as prepared food, that is.

You should still be able to get cats, if any migrants bring them as pets.

Wood, Leather, Coal, Cloth and anything that has "giant" in the animal name. Anvils are decent at the start too.

Yes, Masterwork.

I'm in a forest, so I don't need wood; everything else you guys've mentioned should be useful.

Yes, Masterwork.

In that case, you may find better, more pertinent answers if you post your questions here.

I noticed that subforum has 40 times less threads than this one, and since I'm pretty sure far more than 1/40 people use Masterwork, I assume that subforum is limited to more Masterwork-specific questions.

It is.  Questions like the utility of drakes, turtles, and lizards as pets.

However, the more general ideas given on this thread ought to carry over just as well into MW.  For the most part, that is.

I don't think I'm very good at this game, but I always make sure I have the supplies for dwarves in picky strange moods. They sometimes want wool cloth or silk cloth, despite the mounds of plant fiber cloth I've stockpiled. A variety of multiple raw materials is the best so that your moody dwarves don't go beserk or stark raving mad. Make sure you have animals to butcher for bones and similar such things.

If you can manage it, grab some bars of precious metals (steel, gold, or platinum). I got lucky one time and got a legendary rose-gold mace extremely early on in the game (my first artifact that game). A macedwarf was very happy the next goblin ambush.

And I always grab a bag of gypsum plaster for my hospital. Just in case.

If you don't have the materials to make steel, or just haven't gotten your supply chain together for it yet, it's a good idea to buy whatever steel crap they have and melt it all, or use it as is in a pinch (if you haven't set up a military yet a steel helm and weapon would be a great way to get started).  Trap components are stupidly overpriced (for this reason they are a good thing for you to sell), so pass on those unless you have loads of spare trade goods.  Anvils are one of the cheapest and best sources of iron and steel, order lots.

I also buy all of their food and booze, especially the meat, because there's no good reason not to have a few billion masterwork roasts in a comically oversized food stockpile.  That said, I never order food, except maybe exotic high value meat, because they always bring more than I really need anyways.

I always order gypsum plaster unless I have gypsum, as that's helpful for proper medical care.

As far as animals, I don't play masterwork, but vanilla turkeys are generally regarded as being the best bird for egg and meat production, but I'm fond of geese.  Birds are the ideal animal food source, since once you have nest boxes set up they are absolutely zero maintenance.  So long as dwarves are hauling food, eggs will show up in your stockpiles.  They also produce quite a lot of meat when butchered, considering their lack of grazing, fast growth rate, and often enormous clutch sizes.
As far as non birds go, I like pigs and dogs.  Dogs are dual purpose since they're trainable, but pigs can be milked, and I like having a cheese making industry.  If you get grazers, it's nice if they're shearable, or at least milkable.  Water buffaloes and yaks have high grazing requirements, so avoid them if space is an issue.

I also always buy all their wood, and usually order more, because you can never have enough wood.
