New crops not getting planted
« on: May 15, 2014, 04:36:14 pm »

I have my little farm set to grow plump helmets for every season, and the last ones were just harvested. Nobody's planting more crops though. Why is this? I'm playing with Masterwork.

I use Masterwork. I might not know if a feature is mod specific because I'm a noob.

Do you have seeds?

If you grow stuff faster than your dwarves can eat or brew the helmets, then the seeds can still be locked inside the helmets, not ready to plant again until they are made available by eating or brewing them.

Seed --> Plant it --> Get a plump helmet (but NOT seeds) --> Eat or brew the plump helmet --> Seeds released and made available --> You can now plant again.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Oh that might be the reason. I just bought some off a trader, but they aren't appearing in my stocks. Maybe it isn't counted when it's still at the trade depot.

Hm, dunno about that then. Usually, if you have a stockpile, it won't let you use the stuff until it goes in the stockpile, because it is flagged as "TSK" for moving usually. But that should only take a day or so to move it, then get used. Not any long term delay.

If you DON'T have a relevant stockpile, then the planters should be able to go grab it directly from the trade depot.

I am pretty good at keeping my dorfs busy, so I'm often short on haulers. That's probably it.

I for one vote for the conscription of the young into a hauling fleet sweatshop.

I typically have only 1-2 planters at the early stages of the fort.  If seeds aren't getting planted I turn off hauling for them.
