This sounds like the basis for an excellent short comic strip, wherein keas routinely visit some plane of oblivion or whatever to drop off their shinies. Maybe they are secretly gods.

A kea god of war and fortresses is worshipped in my fort...

We know where the keas have taken the crown.

In this case, you should offer artifacts regularly.

Do we actually know for sure that armok is not a kea? Be sure to spill blood of a migrant on all the artifacts first just in case.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Possibly the most terrifying concept in the history of ever.  Well done, sir or madam - I predict my day will be filled with cold sweats from here on in.

This thread pleases me.

Items stolen by kobolds should go to the kobold's home site; at least, they do in worldgen. Aminols? Good luck brother.

Might be worth a ticket in Mantis though.

hmm. Would they try to snatch a burning lignite artifact? That could be a fun thing to leave on your doorstep.

You had better hope your dwarves are very good at respecting traffic designations if you try that, though it might be amusing to leave it in the path of an elven caravan.

Have you tried:
backing up your save,
abandoning your fort
exporting legends XML data to legends viewer and seeing where the artifact is now.

It may be possible to recover it in adventure mode... who knows?
Do you think that would give new information? I'm already in legends mode and it says that it was lost in a "unknown place"

Probably not I guess... Sounds to me like it is gone forever. You should submit it to toady as a bug if it isn't there already! I imagine keas should become named upon exiting the map with a named item and then exist outside your fortress somewhere.

I really don't think this is a bug so much as a missing feature. Since we know things will exist in a non-static form outside the fort in the next release, I'm sure tracking stolen items across the world map would be a relatively straightforward feature to add. Whether Toady thinks it a priority is another matter.

Speaking of Keas, a flock of them just invaded my fort, making a beeline for my stockpiles. They've already killed two War Dogs.

Damn bloody birds have killed two dogs trained for WAR! What's up with these critters?

Iirc (giant)Keas aren't naturally aggressive, however they tend to lash out if cornered or if their movement is blocked - Which tends to happen all the time once they've found their way into the corridors of your fort.

The same issue can happen with all flying beasts, except that Keas make a beeline for the stockpiles in search of shiny things. Once they're trapped underground they turn into gigantic pack hunting feathered engines of destruction that rip dwarves limb from limb.

Rumours persist of an huge trap-avoid mega-kea that marks the coming of the dwarf apocalypse....
