Where do the keas go?
« on: May 13, 2014, 03:05:09 pm »

To be specific, do they take somewhere the objects they steal? I would like some way to recover this one

i think that stolen items vanish from the world, and can't be recovered. not sure though.

This sounds like the basis for an excellent short comic strip, wherein keas routinely visit some plane of oblivion or whatever to drop off their shinies. Maybe they are secretly gods.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Well, now they have a crown for their bloody interstellar king  >:( Seriously, that was my best artifact in terms of story and I think even value, first a kobold tried to steal it, later a goblin during an ambush and when I managed to kill the thief (my troops and half of my fortress gave literally their lives for it) a flock of keas appeared and they stole it.

First there was an ambush, then a kobold tried to steal it but I stopped him, later a goblin tried the same thing and I managed to kill him when he was abode ground by sending basically all of my dwarfs against him witch caused a massacre due to goblin bowman. And then the kea came while I was retreating.

it must have been a kea spy, then! no doubt they were plotting that theft for a long, long time. watching, waiting for the right opportunity.

keas are patient. very, very patient.

I like reading these threads about people complaining about DF-keas, and all I can think is "they've never seen real ones, there's no way they could complain if they'd met real ones".

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Have you tried:
backing up your save,
abandoning your fort
exporting legends XML data to legends viewer and seeing where the artifact is now.

It may be possible to recover it in adventure mode... who knows?

Do you think that would give new information? I'm already in legends mode and it says that it was lost in a "unknown place"

Probably not I guess... Sounds to me like it is gone forever. You should submit it to toady as a bug if it isn't there already! I imagine keas should become named upon exiting the map with a named item and then exist outside your fortress somewhere.

Would be cool if at some point in the future it was possible for the item to make its way through several hands and then end up coming back to your fortress wielded by a goblin or something.
