Favorite naming schemes for your dwarves.
« on: May 13, 2014, 11:29:57 am »

I've fallen in love with the following name scheme for my dwarves:

Men: US Presidents
Women: Soul Divas

There's something doubly satisfying about watching an inept Millard Fillmore's try to stop the tantrum spiral caused by an outraged Diana Ross.

What name schemes do you use?

Boy band member vs porn stars.  ::) I only know the latter because of books and news articles.

Dev names of CCP Games employees.

Usually names I've read/heard in books/movies/TV shows, or slightly mangled real-world names, or names of dwarves from Syrupleaf.

I rarely name my dwarves except for the occasional story purpose. Professions on the other hand, I can never seem to find a system that satisfies me.  Current fort is using US navy rates for professions, with higher ranks earning spots out of the communal dorm or larger bedrooms.

Quite fond of giving my Dwarves familial names, and titles when they are needed. A dwarf whose hand was bitten off for example becomes Handed.

I tend to name only legendary or significant dwarves, and then the name will be something referring to their occupation so I know who's making a masterpiece this time. Mr. Pointy, Digs, Bas Relief, etc. Currently I have a pair of legendary cooks named Cookie and Cream, a legendary soapmaker named Irish Spring, a glassmaker named Waterford, and a leatherworker named Corinthian, among several others. To my sorrow, my favorite clothier, "I Made A Shoe" Ekurrakust, was killed by, uh, something or other at some point.

After my second fortress in 40d I stopped bothering naming anyone because it's a chore to see the trees from the forest after the first migrant wave or two.

I could see taking the time to name everyone on a no migrants fortress, though.

My naming scheme is specifically to keep track of migrant waves so I always know the new folk.

I start with:

A01
A02

etc, which is essentially Migrant Wave +number, with any children born being lumped into the next wave to arrive. It helps me assign jobs to all the new arrivals as they're really obvious.

It also depersonalises them severely so I don't care if they die etc

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Just realised the system could be improved further by given dwarf children and babies a separate designation so once they grow up I can spot it more efficiently and then give them jobs as well before changing their designation, as well as give the military.

B01c would be the first migrant wave, first person, child. B01m would be the same but military.

Or I could go full dwarf and combine it with the Dwarf Child Care initiative discussed here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=91093.0 for full automaton psychopathy as well as the tag B01mc, first migrant wave, first person, child being trained for military service.

Bah! I love naming my dwarfs, I name them all! Even the little children and babies. I want my forts to be full of personality and soap opera and drama and really wild things. That's where the fun is, for me.

You know dwarf therapist will group your dwarves by migration wave, right?  It's accessible via a drop down menu in the top left.  It groups children in their own waves, though, based on the season they were born.

I just use my own naming system ([Latin word][see below]) Javensky

When determining a name, use earthen/plant words as a prefix for gatherers, farmers, miners, stone/wood crafters, and other naturalists.
Artisans get metal names.
Use bestial or animal names for hunters and soldiers.

Highest political office: Drakas
Others: any term for a body part, esp. Cardia (heart)

Doctors and engineers: use light or water names

Angry people: Fire names
Depressed people: Ice names
Anxious people: air names
