Toss a pebble backwards into the pit, or dip our hands past and below the lip,  to see if the illusion (if it is one) extends to our physical senses.

It's either an illusion, teleportation, or transformation. I'm inclined to think illusion because it only happened to us when we got close, along with mental effects. If it was transformed then why now and not before? If it was teleportation then why are the monsters and soldiers/guards being teleported back to the city?  There's no guarantee that our hand not hitting the pavement means it's not an illusion (just that it'd be more than just visual), but if we feel ground we should be able to get back and take stock of our situation instead of blindly pressing onward.

She looked back at the edge that fell away, convinced that it couldn't be real. She reached down, kneeling before the edge. Sure enough the dip was there. The underside of the edge felt... textureless, smooth and unlike anything she'd experienced before. The stark difference of textures between the top and the underside was quite uncanny.

She backed away from the edge, moving cautiously towards the hospital as the edge followed her to the door. A shadowy figure darted to the right, past the narrow windows of the painted iron double doors as a second gave chase, failing to notice Alex's approach. She drew her revolver, cursing under her breath as her shaking hands reached out to the door, pulling to open as the other hand pointed the firearm to the opening. The inside of the hospital smelt of dust, mold and earth, and a thick layer of moss lined the baseboards along the walls. The rooms were mostly darkened, lit with dimly flickering lights and what appeared to be fireflies that frantically flapped in the air.

She took a step in as the door clicked behind her before letting loose a harsh grinding sound as the door buckled and warped. The hallway had the words 'It awakens' scrawled across it in cheap red spray paint as well as a strange symbol, maybe a glyph of some kind? The symbol was circular with 3 equally spaced smaller circles along the edge with small characters of some kind running along the inside of each circle. The firefly lit hallway she found herself in ran to the left and the right. There was no sign of the figures that ran to the right before she entered. Framed in front of her in a wide glass case was a map of Mercer Medical's first floor. Somehow she doubted it would be right.

Make a drawing on our notepad of the glyph.

Then Look for a medical storage. We may need first aid and morphine.

Alex finished sketching the glyph and checked the map, not certain of where to go from here. She was trapped here with no way out and absolutely no idea what was going on here. The map may or not be wrong, so she may as well use it til it proves itself wrong. The map showed the emergency rooms were to the right of her and down the hall. She could tell right now that she'd want to stock up on medical supplies, and who knows, maybe she'll find someone else in this hellhole.

Stretchers practically lined the left wall, even in places not marked out for them, ominously darkening the hallways as the lights flickered overhead. Every so often there'd be another glyph on the wall, faintly shining in the poor lighting. There was a door marked "Patient Therapy Room 1" on the left, but a loud thumping of wood being stuck inside the room made her reconsider. Beyond that should be... Alex stopped for a moment. There were no other patient rooms next to the first. She put a bit more distance between her and the Therapy Room, just in case. The thumping was still heard clearly throughout the hall, but it was more comforting to be further from it. She pulled out her notebook and started sketching a map for herself. Things were obviously different and it'd be bad to get lost. As she finished the final line of her map she glanced down the hall towards what should be the emergency room, and sure enough there was a door there, partially opened. Blood marred the walls just before it. She slowly crept up to the door and took a peek into the room, trying not to panic in case there was still something there.

It was indeed the emergency room. Curtained off beds lined the wide room in two long rows and the blare of static off the TVs over each bed, fighting for dear life to stay on, drowning out most sounds throughout the room. The room was better lit than the hallway with a plethora of fireflies dancing underneath the slightly dimmed fluorescent lights, revealing the blood splatters all over the drawn curtains of the first row of beds. The blood at the door led inwards stopping at the dead body halfway in, most likely the source of a lot of blood in the room. There was a fairly small creature, maybe two feet tall hunched over it, facing away from Alex. Just past the door was the receptionist's desk, on it was a pair of what had to have be police badges and a single nightstick. The the far end of the room was a door and an emergency first aid kit suspended on the wall.

If we can reach the nightstick use it to beat the small thing to death, failing that beat it with the .44.

Edit: Also congrats on leaving the butcher's son to die guys >_>

Remember that first hellhound thing you guys saw, and how it was stuck in a fence. Well yeah guess what? You found a trail of blood, a location near the butcher shop, and even a piece of blood stained clothing backed by something that resembled the accoun the butcher gave trying to get at something behind a fence. Who do you fancy was behind that fence?

We need to kill this thing quietly

""Kill with blunt object if possible (preferably over its head.) If nothing found get.out of there. We may need to escape quickly and tell the butcher what we saw. If he doesn't want to believe us fine, this way to dangerous anyhow.

Wasn't about to force the issue when the action was to walk away. So... We're not collecting that reward. Just a heads up, like in the game I did in the past, if I mention or imply something and no one acknowledges it, it still is there and might still be relevant in some way. It's up to the posters whether or not to look around.

""...If nothing found get.out of there. We may need to escape quickly and tell the butcher what we saw. If he doesn't want to believe us fine, this way to dangerous anyhow.
The doorway barred itself and before that the ground fell away. No turning back til this business is finished or another exit is found.

Alex lightly lifted the nightstick from the desk, careful not to shuffle the badges and miscellaneous papers onto the floor. She tensely gripped the end of the nightstick and drew the .44 from her bag with the other. Her heart slammed in her chest as she stepped towards the thing, as she neared it she realized it was eating that corpse and that it was dressed in a lightweight cloth police uniform. She slammed the thing's cold grey head across the temple with a bloodthirsty adrenaline-filled shout. It slid a good foot to the left with a hunk of the corpse's neck flying along with it, bouncing the thing's head once across the floor coating and marking the floor with a dark nearly-black fluid. It lifted it's head heavily and hesitantly, hissing at Alex with it's red soaked face. Alex let out another shout, wailing on the thing with the nightstick. After about three hits it stopped moving, but she didn't stop for twenty. She panted wide-eyed, staring at the odd creature she'd just killed. The parts that weren't covered in a black blood were mostly grey with a circular mouth of razor sharp teeth, hook like arms and stubby legs. A fine stitching snaked around it's body, clearly holding the thing together.

The police officer was clearly dead, and the sight of the body was starting to turn her stomach more and more as the adrenaline started fading. She turned away, looking around the room. There wasn't much to the room, just the desk, curtained beds, first aid cabinets, and the exit to the next room at the far end. She wasn't sure if she wanted to know what was behind the curtains given what that thing was doing to the police officer.

Search the police officer's corpse for anything of use, another gun, some ammo, a radio, etc.
