and let us not scrape away at Austria's achievements, the song was good enough to win after all.

I'm pretty sure it was just the shock factor. The song wasn't terrible (it had its moments), but it wasn't overly special.

BTW it is rather amusing that Russia gave 10 to a drag queen. Considering political 12 to Belarus that is almost the first place.  I am using that fact to troll homophobic Russians hard

Should not trust my memory :), 3rd place in the televoting isn't bad, too

Didn't expect Austria to win, though it makes sense. I did think it would finish quite high but eh, what gives, Beard too stronk. Song was ok, a cliche James Bond intro with accompanying lights-and-magic and (s)he has a decent voice, but I'm simply not used to such ballads winning Eurovision. Then again, it's been years since I actually cared to watch Eurovison.

Also didn't expect Netherlands to finish this high. Yeah the song was decent, but ultimately boring, I think? Personally, my money was on the Hungary. Liked Iceland too. And Poland was so silly I really wanted it to win. And strange enough, seems like I was amongst 0,1% that actually though France had a cool song.

Despite everything though, booing Russia/whenever Russia got points was just wrong and it makes me effin sad.

I actually liked France o_O Poland... ick. I was on-board for a while but it just went past porny and into disgusted disinterest for me pretty quickly.

I'd give France more slack if they actually all wore moustaches.

I was under the impression the song was a tragic tale about how they couldn't get moustaches. How nice of you to mock their one disability.

I liked the Armenian power balladish song (if that was Armenia), Norway's entry, and a two more I can't remember any more. They slip out of memory fast. Over all, though, I think this was a pretty good year songwise. Lots of non-remarkables but very few actually bad songs. There was also a surprisingly small amount of out of tune singing as well. And that's always a plus.

And as I said in the irc yesterday, I was a bit sad but mostly happy when the Netherlands and Austria started leaving Sweden behind. As much as it would have been fun to win again so soon, it wouldn't have been very fun at all to have to pay for all of this again so soon ;)

Did you watch it live all over there?

I would like to issue a formal apology for two reasons:
For one, I have mocked France for their lack of moustaches when they were singing about their inability to grow moustaches. I have dealt a terrible insult at the coldest of times.
Secondly, I have confused Armenia's wubs for Azerbaijan's fire starter, and am sorry for any injuries that this may have caused.

I have a feeling that France didn't want to win [occasionally you get the big 5 fielding their weaker singers to make sure they don't have to pay for the next eurovision] but that was sad, and it was at least as good as Greece's [which isn't saying much]. Armenia demonstrated the best of dubstep, in that it is a buildup of guttural emotion and noise without once actually losing track of the rising melody or the message. As opposed to massive wubs for the sake of wubs. Netherlands I'd disagree as being boring, simply unusual to see in the eurovision. I'm not just saying they should have won because they were different, I'm saying they should have won because they were good! The chemistry was good, the song good, the set wasn't opulent, the whole thing kept my attention in a vice grip without loud noises or flashing lights, its soft and sonorous piece drawing you closer into the spinning cameras that wouldn't fucking stop revolving [which is not their fault in any case :P]. Hungary's combination of soul and D&B was also quite a surprise, I thought their's was quite all right. I loved how fun Iceland was, and they were singing about a message that of course is always good for Eurovision. Germany had a pink-alike, though her song dragged on just a little and was close to being perfect for its genre.

Poland.

Switzerland was not lacking at all in ambition, I can't help but compare it to Rybak as obviously they were both keen on the violins; it worked for Switzerland [though not nearly as well] but was still a good song, the whistling just made it all the better; it has one of the most memorable melodies. Norway's ballad [ok, some may be tired of them, but this one still has a place with me] was good, Denmark's weird Bruno Mars/One Direction hybrid worked well despite me being apathetic or distasteful towards Bruno Mars and One Direction. Russia fielded one of their strongest singing groups in a while, and it's no secret that their booing can be attributed to the Ukraine crisis and the censorship of yesteryear, a proper shame that. I joke about the UK being the best, I honestly don't think they were, but they were actually genuinely good this year - I guess Europe just doesn't like victory anthems as much as we do. Y'all need some Freddie Mercury.

Looking over the voting scores and the points spread is interesting. Also in Belarus, both the public and the jury ranked Russia #1 [though not that surprising, especially considering at the high end the jury and the public both tend to hover around the same decision].

Unanimous consensus! That's something you see never!

I think in order to win, the UK will have to either resurrect Freddie Mercury as some kind of android or hologram like at the Olympics.

I think that UK's poor performance at Eurovision is connected with the UK's entries being automatically admitted into the final (due to Britain being a founding member of EBU and all that). They just aren't trying much.

In order to win one needs something new or well forgotten old. Be it hardrockers in masks, lesbian with a prayer in non-English language, smiling charismatic violin player,  or a drag queen with a beard.

That or place a large diaspora in all countries of Europe

Would have been cool and possibly a symbolic blow to the face at Russia if Ukraine won. Not that it would have affected anything.
