Say, I've been thinking. What if there's a mad Phillip Zimbardo running the show from the shadows? Like a scientifically-inclined Richelieu, pulling on strings, assigning roles to play. Or, maybe Eurovision is the safety valve for the world's overflowing idiocy? The Reptilian New World Order(or whomever is doing the ruling these days) has created it to stave off the looming threat of the stupid reaching critical mass and imploding the planet. Every year it airs, Earth is given a brief period of respite, as all the stupid is siphoned into one place and aired away into space.
It's all but a temporary bandaid, though, as the stupid swells more and more with every year. And the people pulling the strings realise that all too well. They're the hull repair team on a submarine headed for the Mariana Trench, plugging the holes with grim determination.

And I think some of the participants are onto it, too. That's why they have this crazed glimmer in their eyes. They know the fate of the planet depends on them swallowing all their pride and erasing any semblance of self-respect. They sacrifice themselves in quiet desperation to buy us all another year of pointless, doomed existence.
