Adventures with Diamond Kitty
Today's project was to build an iron farm. I've been thinking about it for a while, but just never got around to it. Decided it was time.
To begin with I chose a spot ~150 blocks away from my
villager death trap Happy Fun Palace. Then, a quick bit of added road leading to a chest with hoppers encased in glass:
Which totally didn't work right because I tried making it three wide instead of 2, which made lava control difficult. Eventually I gaveup and just made it 2 wide. So the building doesn't align quite like I'd have preferred, but it's acceptable. Here's a side view of the finished kill chamber. Iron golems fall down the chute into the water stream where they're carried into the head-height lava. This kills them. The hoppers then pick up the drops and deliver them into the chest. No fancy item sorting. I'm sure people can handle disposing of extra flowers.
Next, a basic platform. The jack o lanterns are around the drop chute.
Then I decided to add an extra lighting layer. Mostly just because. The design should prevent anything other than golems from spawning, but even if something did get inside it would just die in the lava anyway.
Here I add the water streams. Messed that up first time, too. Only placed one block at each diagonal, not three. So the water filled in and I had to bring up a bunch of sand to fill it in and dig it out again.
Added doors. I didn't remember exactly how many were required so I just filled in the available space for 48 total. Way more than required. At a later date I might alter the design to allow villager trading. Last one of these I built did, and I left space for an access path to be added later.
With the doors in place, it was a fast to add walls and a fence to contain the villagers.
Transporting villagers took a couple hundred rails and a couple game days. It was a significant portion of the total build time.
But here they are, all warm and snug. These two bred almost immediately after I released them inside the fence. It will take 2-3 hours for them to breed enough that golems will spawn. A bit unfortunate they couldn't have been up there breeding the entire time I was building.
The roof. Note the inside is open to the air. It has to be for the doors to be considered valid houses.
At this point, we're basically done and waiting on villagers to breed. So, we clean up, put a wall around the farm, make it pretty and safe.
Exterior view:
* Build time: 4.5 hours
* 48 doors
* Roughly a double chest worth of cobblestone
Location: (1000,-800)
Note that while it will
probably work, as of the time of this writing, it's not possible to test it yet because t still needs an hour or two of afking to become active and I won't be doing that tonight as this computer will be used for other things. If anyone else wants to do the afking, feel free. Also note that this is a basic, one village iron farm that will probably only generate about 32 iron per hour. So, afk overnight for 4-5 stacks of iron. I think that will be sufficient for our needs.
As a side note, I've mentioned this before, but this farm, like some other things I have going on in my part of the world, can be broken by placing doors. Visitors to the pyramid at (1000,-1000) will notice that there are no doors in use to the outside, and I'm using water traps instead. Anyone who wants to settle near the iron farm, please talk to me first. I haven't checked exact radius, but it's likely that even a single door placed within a 60-80 blocks of the farm would cause it to stop working.
