Just "Survived" My first siege
« on: May 09, 2014, 12:38:03 am »

But barely.  All of my original seven are now dead.  Went from about 60 odd dwarves to 20.  I'm back to 37 now and decided to try to regain control of my fort instead of abandoning and starting over.  Really exciting to watch them slowly start to come around.  Every day I sit down to play this game, I am shocked and amazed all over again.  That being said, I want to grab all 37 of my dwarves and shake them and yell at them "If all you assholes would shut up for five minutes and work, everything will be FINE!"

I remember my first ambush, I had dug a hole to make some pond water more easily accesible for drinking (at the time I thought alcohol was difficult to make and not so useful...) The goblin ambush showed up RIGHT at the meeting hall through that hole.

must be a tantrum spiral. It could last for a whole season. Enjoy as you watch them do suicidal things because of it :)

surviving a siege-induced tantrum spiral is pretty fun.  You get to see dwarven justice in action, and the challenge is a nice change of pace.  All you really have to do is keep a few dwarves alive long enough for migrants to come.  Just be proactive about tombing bodies and dumping rotting stuff, and assign remaining sane dwarves to nicer bedrooms and such.  A mayor skilled in consoler/pacifier can really work wonders, individually saving a dwarf from madness with each conversation.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Ya, they seem to be coming around now.  I've gotten two migrant waves and am back up to 62 dwarves now, most being fine and content.  The hardest part, for me at this point, is wrestling with Dwarf Therapist to make sure I have all my labors covered while still maintaining a steady workflow in my fort.  Still working out way to better the rooms of my Nobles.  Thanks for the advice on a consoler/pacifier mayor.   One thing I haven't really figured out yet is proper dumping.  I just put all my refuse and dead bodies in stockpiles either within my walls outside our outside of my walls.  I entomb dwarves as often as I have tombs, but work is slow right now.

Edit:  What can I do about ghosts of former dwarves haunting my fort?  Who do I call??

I lock the mad ones in their rooms so they can't hurt other dwarves.  The ones that are insolently dangerous mad I either put on the bridge of doom or let them stay in their rooms for a year or two.

My first siege:
attackers: 5 goblins
casualties: 1 dwarf
The rest killed each other or committed suicide while the goblins laughed behind the closed gate.

Heh, just wait until you start up with really big populations. I once went from 164 dwarves to 43. It took a year and a half to run its course, and over that time period, no migrants arrived because of the danger. It was set off by a FB that flew over the wall (I was running a cavern fort) and murdered the dwarves harvesting pig tails. The fortress guard (first on the scene) managed to kill the beast with heavy casualties, but the damage was done. I had to put the military on patrol in my halls, deputize soldiers retired because of wounds, and completely restrict certain areas to civilian traffic to keep essential services running. I even put all of the artifact creators under protective custody in the former training room. Things eventually calmed down, but I haven't had so much ‼FUN‼ since.

Even if you found a suitable opening, I doubt it would prove all too satisfying. And it might leave some nasty wounds, depending on the moral high ground's geology.

I'm seriously hoping you aren't speaking of our go-to fix to everything. Applying it in RL may cause severe damage to earth's crust.
