The channel needs to lead down directly above the target, but if the chute is high enough Urist can't get line of sight. Put a hatch cover linked to a release lever on the Z-level below the dump if you want to use a short chute.

So why haven't those siege arrows appear in battle log? Was that because wooden ones were so weak? Or was that FB in some special position where it was unaffected by those arrows?

Because they missed. It might have been a random chance of missing, a sub-tile direction value (even arrows that appear to fly straight can have a small variation from straight), the position of the enemy (prone), or a bug. If the enemy was actually threatened by the arrow it would have appeared in the logs as a dodge, block, harmless impact, etc.

So even arrows that are 3 tiles long are affected by subtile position like minecarts are? Aww.
