I'm surprised you didn't pick the other half, too.

Corpses lining the hallways is mostly box standard for DF, exceptions being refuse day.

What?! Refuse day, you say? I didn't know the elven merchants would take corpses.

I'm pretty sure he meant the day when he designates a refuse stockpile or dump flags items, and they haul them all to the garbage so that they're not in the halls anymore.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

Refuse day is the day you sell all of your processed corpses to caravans. With necromancy you can even do this to humanoid corpses!

I know the answer:

Because Dwarf Fortress.

Seriously, isn't this the answer to half the inexplicable problems on here? It's like how my dwarves get cut by a single bolt and 10 years later they're still in hospital with "His hand is cut open"

Because Dwarf Fortress.

Btw, last time this happened to me (fractured wrist in traction for 6 years), it turned out it was because there was a forbidden bolt lodged in the wound. Since it was forbidden, the doctors couldn't get it out.

Button, it's inexcusable that you had to suffer in pain that long.  Have a word with your Overseer, and tonight you might find some shiny new furniture in your bedroom to offset those unhappy thoughts.

Fire imps don't breathe. Read the wiki.

Maybe the forgotten beast webs cause people to live forever. More research is needed.

My fire imps are not the fire imps from the normal game. They breathe and can eat plants. They also have a lot of other modifications, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

I had a hunter get stuck in a web for several months. She managed to knock out the giant cave spider that made the webs, but the combat log was about 44 pages of "the hunter is stuck in the web!"

Eventually, another hunter came down and finished off the spider. Then the first hunter went to the booze stockpile because she was thirsty. As in, she decided she no longer wanted to be stuck in the web and she just left.

@the OP:

That happens sometimes as a result of some ancient bug in deciding when a creature should die whilst it is being attacked nonstop. First time I read about it, someone had a dwarf who had been trapped by a gang of monkeys and mercilessly mauled for several seasons. The dwarf died immediately after the monkeys were run off.

Which raises an interesting ethical question of whether you should or should not "save" dwarves in such circumstances?

After all, he was "ecstatic" while being strangled, right? It's not like it was eternal torture from his perspective. So shouldn't you just let him be immortally ecstatic? Wall off the FB and the dwarf and let them exist until the end of times.

No, you have the refuse stockpile and press the "mark all for trade" button.

I'm having rather similar phenomena right now. Well mostly.
Goblins came. With their leader. Who happened to be former comic show employee.
So, I should have bewared his poisonous vapours. But I hadn't.
A dozen of dwarves got contaminated by his excretions. The syndrome causes either paralysis or function impairment onto spine. (Seen spines painted in blue on contaminated animals.)
Now I have five infinitely winded dwarves sealed in my courtyard along with severely mangled goblin overlord, who for some reason doesn't attempt to attack them.
I've managed to bring another six or so to hospital. But the doctors don't seem to attempt to diagnose them. Actually, some of them probably had been diagnosed and that caused them to suffocate.
They don't have any contaminants on themselves but their clothes are soaked with extract. I've tried pumping and pouring water on them, that failed to remove contaminants from their clothes and didn't give water coverings to them. Their happiness is seemengly locked, I have a couple of fine, one ecstatic and one miserable dwarf, this hasn't changed for two seasons now.
Interestingly though, when I deconstruct the bed under such dwarfs, they give error message "cancels rest: interrupted by goblin overlord" which is followed by doctor's "cancels diagnose: patient not resting".
The overlord himself behaves oddly as well, the siege is long broken but he didn't seem to attempt retreat. As mentioned before, all his appendages are mangled, but he doesn't even attempt to push the comatose dwarfs near him. All he does is eventual additional sprinkle of secretions.
Later on, several animals and one dwarf, that didn't participate in the fighting, have died regularly after contacting the secretion pools on the floor.
