Assigning Cabinet to Mayor etc...
« on: May 07, 2014, 03:01:46 pm »

My mayor requires a cabinet, that stuck up chump.  I gave him all the other crap he asked for, but for ome reason I can't assign the cabinet to him.  When I try to assign, it always gives me a militia option, unlike other furniture in his room.  When I assign it to him, his needs are still not satisfied...

p.s.  Sorry for the "Help Me" spam today.  I'm not working today...

Build the cabinet in a room designated for him.

Either his bedroom, his office, or his dining room.
Same applies for boxes/bags, armor stands, and weapon racks.

I did all that, and everything else in the room is owned by the mayor.  But on the cabinet, where it "should" say owned by mayor, it says the name of my Militia Squad highlighted in blue and I can't get it  to change.

Unbuild it and rebuild it. If that fails, try adding another cabinet or make a separate cabinet room for your major.

It won't actually say "owned by [mayor]", and it doesn't need to - if your Mayor is demanding furniture in a particular room (or it's just part of general noble furniture requirements), then all you need to do is build it in that room and he should be satisfied (i.e. there's no need to assign any of them).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

In faaaaaaact, my personal science has noticed that assigning different pieces of furniture in a single room as multiple rooms will decrease the overall quality of his room. My Queen's Throne room turned from a Royal Throne Room into a Great Office and Great Dining Room, when I was messing around.

Interesting...do you assign the bed at least, just to make sure he gets in the room?

I think you're still slightly confused. The items do not need to be assigned. Put all your items in there, put the bed in there, create a room from the bed, and assign that to him. Voila, you meet the criteria for all your mayor's needs! No need to touch any of the other items once constructed :D

Ya, that's what I mean, sorry if it didn't make sense.  Just assign the bed.  Problem solved, thanks for the help! I was following along with a youtube video that said to assign all the items...now I'm smarter than youtube!  Thanks for the help.  And if I didn't mention it in this thread yet...

Please, someone take this game away from me!  I feel bad for everyone too intimidated by it to really "delve" in.

Alternatively, if you wanted to elect a cabinet as mayor, then I would be sorry to inform you that Dwarf Fortress does not yet support the election of inanimate objects into noble positions.

If Caligula could put a horse in the senate, surely a dwarf noble could make a cabinet king.  We must keep up!  For !!SCIENCE!!

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

It's not like the cabinet would do a worse job. Probably good at listening to complaints.

Once Toady implements "animated objects", it would be possible to make an arbitrary item into a unit (and thus a historical figure), but right now it's not likely (unless you can somehow manipulate the data structures used for reanimated corpses, though it's unlikely since non-corpse items don't have body plans).
