I want to add a second (maybe cave) civ.  I want them to be mischievous, and not necessarily thieves.  As I understand it they will spawn invisible and pull levers.  So, even if they don't spawn randomly to play or are hostile even their traders should be fun.

I don't have a good idea of who they would be.

'dopplegangers'  too complex for a standardized civ.
'cheshire cats'?  I could do cat-folk,
'chameleon lizards?  I like the idea of aggressive lizards.
Octopi?

I dont know enough fantasy to get a good idea of what I want.  I have a modded race that is not trapavoid and steals, already . . .

You could have a race of octopuses that change colour and mess around. They'd be able to breathe underwater and might have some other odd ethics.

Pretty much.

Nightmarish.

Likewise.
Octopi?
Eh, what would they be doing in a cave?

I keep coming back to the idea of a cave full of almost vermin-sized sapient geckos that love messing with travelers and engorging themselves on the foodstores of others.

sapient lizardmen that live underground and like to screw with outsiders sounds fantastic.

Lizard . . . or

Mouse.  I do like the small idea.  Also looking into the weapon problem.  If they are a race they need protection.  And thus need to have a minimal size of 5k or get custom weapons.  Can you make custom armor that small?

So Rats.  Or mice.  Prototype that only edits the Creature:standard.txt.

The original description sounds like a gremlin, and all it would need is "promotion" to a civilization.

Despite the gremlin's presence in vanilla Dwarf Fortress, they are decidedly modern folklore (an explanation for mysterious mechanical problems with early aircraft).  A currently-vacant niche in DF period folklore would perhaps be a sprite.

Since we need more nightmare fuel, I'm considering modding in a race of Naked Mole Rats.
Eyeless. Hairless. External teeth. Eusocial. And they dig. Not to mention that they're a real life example of [NO_PAIN]; they lack the neutransmitters that make them feel pain.
Except you know a dwarf will end up liking them for their nightmarish features and they'll end up engraved in all the bedrooms.

The vanilla rodent men sounds like a good candidate.
They fit the theme, and are the only subterranean animal people without some sort of interesting attribute (water-breathing, flight, venom).

Like the Mole Rat idea, too - it's rare for a creature to have NO_PAIN and not be an unholy terror.

It gets worse. It gets so much worse.
I've considered making some castes mischevious, some classes steal your booze/food/items (two worker classes respectively), a class that's just insanely agressive (soldier caste) and have the breeding castes run away if they ever see you.
Workers could also pick locks. Oh, and I'm waiting for the next version to finish this so I can use underground sites, meaning that digging invaders could be turned on.
I'm tempted to give them an absurdly powerful bite too, seeing as they dig with their external teeth.

I thought of making them TRAPAVOID but decided that's just sadistic.

I'm not familiar enough with modding to know if you can set trapavoid for only certain casts rather than the creature as a whole, but it would make sense to have the mischievous and thieving casts as trap avoidant.

Has anyone seen a gnome recently?  They're fairly loosely defined - you can have burrowing underground gnomes, tinkers, illusionists that go invisible, etc.
