What weapon do I have? Find out by putting it in the face of the nearest spearman/marksman.

Not really - it's just that you have a crossbow (the most lethal weapon on the battlefield), no armor to speak of (thus being the only one I could possibly hurt with my short sword) and are somehow not dead yet, all of which make you the only feasible target for my assault! And, from the crossbow, a priority target as well. Marksmen rule the battlefield, after all.

Well, yes and no. They're only good against heavily armored targets. Otherwise, melee trumps them.

The accuracy bonus is really the murderous part about them, I would say.

Maybe, but then you only get to shoot one turn out of two, and you're fodder in between.
