Chapter 15: Preparing for the First Night

Time: Early-Evening
The sun dips down below the horizon...
"Well, It's starting to get late. We might want to start preparing a place to sleep. The farmhouse seems logical, as cleaning up the barn would take too long and smell too bad at the moment. Any objections?"
Alejandro goes to the farmhouse and looks for beds/beddings and/or materials to make some. If necessary, he tries to lay more beddings upstairs so that there is a total of at least 6 beds/beddings.
"That does sound awfully logical, and I would do quite a few things to stay away from that barn."
Help him out.
Fortify the house.
Wander around and see if I can scavenge any parts from broken machinery or electronics.
Alejandro and Majikthise head into the house to set up the sleeping arrangements for the night. The two of them discover some Mattresses in a closet previously unseen upstairs, three to be exact. They're fairly spacy, though there aren't enough for everyone. There doesn't seem to be any blankets or comforters either, so everyone will just have to brace whatever the whether is tonight unless something can be made before then. The mattresses appear to be old and dusty, but lack gross stains that seem to be prevalent when it comes to old mattresses. They have retained most of their stuffing material, so they still have some buoyancy.
Big Joe looks for ways to fortify the house. The doors seem to be in working condition and even look, though they look like enough force could break them up, whether that's from someone trying to get in or a bad storm. The windows aren't doing so well, many of them are cracked and/or partially missing. The basement is totally submerged, getting it cleared up would require pumping. Mattresses have been discovered, but lack any sort of covering or support.
As for raw materials to be used, there is no wood in stock, though some parts of the House or Barn could be taken apart and re-purposed elsewhere. Joe saw earlier that John had a supply of nails as well.
Decado searches around for machinery or electronics, but the Farmhouse seems quite barren. There is the old broken television set in the corner of the living room, though any technology coming from it is going to be a half-century old at the least. There might be some stuff in the basement, although it's likely underwater at this point. There's definitely more technology at the university, but there's the problem of the monkeys. He recalls on the highway to Monticello a faded billboard for a Best Buy in the city. Maybe he could convince some people to check that out with him, plus, there's bound to be some useful stuff left in the city, electronic or not.
"You mind makin' it half of each?" Jason asks Charlie.
"You got yourself a deal."
Charlie pries himself from his stash to complete the transaction. he Penthouse Magazine is traded away for 2 .40 Clips, 3 Bullet-shaped Arrows and 3 normal Arrows. "Now, y'all best get back to where you're sleeping. I've been here long enough to know that things get wicked out here at night. You got looters and freaks, and then there's the snakes and coyotes. Stay safe, I've got some 'ladies' to attend to," he says flashing the magazine as he goes back into his little shop and closes the reinforced metal door.

Meat Cleaver - John had to prepare a Lamb for a party and he didn't have a proper tool, so he "borrowed" this from work. They won't need it back now anyways. Menacing, deadly, fast, and exceptionally sharp, the one downside to the cleaver is that it has a very small effective range.
