I'd recommend FTL [9.99 IS under 10 $]. I'm assuming you've played DF, since you're on these forums, so I think its rogue like game play and all-around awesome will appeal to you. The first Portal game is also really awesome, even if you're not usually into puzzle games.

Provided we can get some Bay-12 servers up, Super Laser Racer is a nice little nugget. Even singleplayer is still fun, and the music's not half bad either. It's like Tron vector styles meets Super Mario Kart from a top-down perspective. 12 racers racing, all kinds of fun. Better than it sounds.

On-topic: I got a load of playtime out of Dungeons of Dredmor. Terraria, maybe, even though I hate the direction they took the endgame. VVVVVV If you like Nintendo-hard platformers.

Star Wars Battlefront II is current $3.39. Low system requirements and well worth even its original price.
There's a whole bunch of Star Wars games under $10 as well.
Prototype is $5, while Prototype 2 is $10.
Chaos Domain is an simple side-scrolling shooter for $5.
7.62 High Calibre plays like a 3D Jagged Alliance game. Currently $4. May have compatability issues though.

Apparently Battlefront 2 goes offline at the end of the month, though.
Is it worth buying and playing as much as possible before then? I've never actually tried it out. Does it have players?

Personally, back when I had Battlefront I played it for the campaign, and at $3.39 it's worth it just for that. In fact, I think I'll go grab it right now.

Battlefront 2's campaign was pretty good, although Galatic Conquest in 1 was better than in 2. I personally find 1 to be a lot more fun in single player, too.

For some obvious ones:

Doom and Doom 2 are each under $10 IIRC. I recommend playing through ZDoom unless you're psychopathically purist, and even then I'd recommend Chocolate Doom for some bugfixes.

AVOID Quake and Quake 2. The Steam versions of both have no music, and the only fix is to have the original CD or a .iso loaded.

Each game in the XCOM series except Enemy Unknown is under $10 last I checked. Very hard strategy games with some business management elements.
