The pasture is the walled off area to the left, which i have plans to expand very shortly

The courtyard will soon be the capital building which will contain all of the greatest works of art in the settlement,

Also so far my artifacts have been worth pretty much nothing since i have very few valuable items however i have had 3 moods so far and have gotten the following

Artifact Bronze Spear
Artifact Silver Door
Artifact Wooden Trumpet

Above ground forts are great.

Usually only viable around 5 years into the game when you're actually strong enough to defend it.

Your fort is amazing though. Post to watch indeed, also stealing the ideaaaaaaaa :3

Underground farms seem sort of odd / cheaty in an aboveground fort playthrough. Since the premise is presumably something like "pretending to be humans" or "pretending mining is really difficult," aboveground crops should be heavily preferred for realism and for economy, respectively.

Also, for hauling efficiency, I would have suggested a more compact layout, and then expanding upward later on, but it is a bit late for that (and maybe you were concerned about running out of wood for floors?)

Be sure to make at least one building that can be entirely sealed off from the air, that has a good amount of food and drink reserves and bolt ammo. In the event of flying attackers (goblins bring flying bat mounts eventually, if nothing else), you want to be able to burrow your people in a central "keep" for potentially awhile if you aren't ready to kill them all right away.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

All of my buildings are completely cut off from air attacks, and the reason I have underground farms is because of the rarity of above ground farms and I could only get a effectiant amount of them by caravans and I needed the food :P

Very interesting idea with how your going with this.

I have wanted to try out an above ground fort, however I tend to like big builds that can be a royal PITA above ground, also I love my underground farm complexes, even though I will never need 150k+ meals I tend to end up with somehow.

Looks good and will certainly keep an eye on this thread.

How is this fort going?

Mine was going to be a succession fort but I had to scrap the idea for now because I have upload issues. I still love working on the surface.

If you get the Peridexis LNP you get a script that allows you to change embark size. I usually go with 30 humans for a surface embark. Plenty of workers and spare people for other stuff.

I think livestock breeding is bugged -- animals born on your land will always be scrawny, and nearly useless for meat.  Breeding animals for milk, wool, or eggs should be fine though.

Is part of the challenge that you're going to use wood for all constructions?  Or are you fine with quarrying stone to build stone walls and such?

For building upper floors, you can do it from the inside, too, without using outside scaffolding.  Ramps or stairs on the outside of buildings will allow goblins (etc) to sneak in through the unfinished upstairs.  Here's the right way to do it:  Build an up-stair (or up-down stair), and once it's complete you can designate a down-stair (or up-down) on the next level up.  Your workers will stand on the lower floor and build the upper one.  Once that's done, you can build a floor on the upper level and then walls.  To build a roof, build a ramp in place of one of the intended wall tiles, then go up a level and build the roof.  Then deconstruct the ramp, and build a wall tile in its place.

We have breached the caverns and i have set up cage traps in some heavily populated cavern area's

My military is at 40 dwarves and is more than efficient so far

The fort is just barely starting to have issues with housing, and such i made much to small of a store house, not enough houses for my inhabitants and my army is still undertrained.

The Dwarven Miners breached the 3rd Cavern and were greeted by a large Adamanite Spiral which is currently being mined out,

This is a gift from the heavens that will not only allow us to boost our dwindling Forging Economy but also allow us to arm our soldiers with the best weaponry possible.

I believe they are small either due to under feeding or because its mother and father were small (guessing)

Also I have just been sieges by 140 goblins I managed to rain hell on them by recruiting 100 archers and oh god they died in seconds,

We have just become a mountainhome! With 200 dwarves strong we shall stand our ground against the oncoming goblin and human armies! We have a wealth of 3 million and quickly rising as well as a training army of 55 dwarves and 75 in reserves.

Lastly I am planning on making a community fort similar to this after this current fort falls
