The year is 325, the Dwarves and Elves are quickly becoming weaker and weaker against the ever-growing threat of the humans, at the moment all civilizations are at peace and no war is occurring however it is obvious the Humans wish to expand into the mountains to collect the great riches that lie within them.

Knowing this the Queen of the Romekmedtob reached a decision in early summer to send a small caravan into the borders of the Human and Dwarven Races borders to construct a great and prosperous Above-Ground Fortress, and if the need arises to be the center warzone against the growing human armies.

The Dwarves arriving at the location early spring with enough food and liquor to last them roughly a year they quickly got to work and within 1 1/2 the settlement was complete. Standing at 16 Dwarves strong they will slowly become stronger and stronger however this will not be a easy task with the Goblins constructing camps in the nearby caves and the Humans preparing the flags of war.

I'm going to be keeping an eye on this thread. I've been doing human surface settlements for a while, and it'll be nice seeing someone else work.

What's your ratio of soldiers to support personnel?

Are all of those buildings multiple floors? Wondering how you'll have room as more migrants arrive and more workshops are needed. I'm also curious about how you mine thematically. Mine usually end up consisting of a stairwell going down until it see's something interesting.

On the far right you can see my mining area it goes down several levels and then i mine it out right now i am trying to get a solid amount of stones and in about one year i will have a fully operational smelting operation going on,

And none of them have multiple floors yet i am having trouble placing the walls it seems as if i am unable to for some reason which i cannot find out yet,

However i have enough room for 20 more migrants before i will have to expand my living quarters and since i am not sure how to make second level building i will probably mine one down into the Town Inn which will add 24 more rooms.

Year 2, Early Winter

We were ambushed by several Goblins while our military was running a exercise all the 7 goblins were dispatched rather quickly with only one injury occurring, the Commander Of The Militia was struck by a dagger in the head and it broke his skull open thankfully no damage was done to the brain and he is currently resting in the hospital (Under the Inn) he is expected to make a full recovery in the coming months.

We have also purchased several cows from a elven caravan allowing us to have a steady breeding/butchering ratio, allowing us to never have issues with food.

This seems interesting, and I've played around with the concept myself before. PtW.

We have just entered Winter,

Food Stocks are as the following
Meat 201
Fish: 51
Plants: 137
Liquor: 1479

Thanks to the dwarven caravan i have a fully fledged farm of Plump Helmets (6 3x3 farms) and thanks to the great Elven Kingdom i have managed to secure 2 bulls and 8 cows which will soon be giving birth to there young to allow future breeding operations.

However the entire area is depleted of all metals in which at the time we are being forced to buy foreign weapons and armors, however thanks to the Carpenters construction of furniture and the Masons construction of statues we have managed to secure several sets of armor and some weapons.

We currently have 5 units in our military (3 melee and 2 ranged) and more are expected to join when the next Migrant wave arrives.

*Future Projects*

Dock: A small dock will be created to allow easy fishing for our dwarves in case we ever encounter a famine.

Metal Excavation: A large mining operation will be occurring within the next 3 years to discover a plentiful amount of metals to allow us to become completely self sufficient.

Safety Room: Within the next 5 years a safety room will be installed which will be a safezone when the village is under attack and in case overrun we would be able to survive in it.

It would contain a well to get water, alcohol and a large farm to allow further safety for our civilization.

Neat fort! Keep it going!
Say, is the shoreline completely square?! No beach or anything? How can that be?

Also, I see your refuse stockpile with corpses is out in the open. You don't have any necromancer towers nearby, do you?

As for multiple floors, just build the scaffolding on the outside of the building, start with the floors, and with the corner walls, put them last, after they have the rest of the wall for support and using an extra floor tile so the dwarfs can build them(they need a 90 degree angle to the wall to build), something like this :
x=====
_+++++

where x is the wall in the corner, _ is a temporary floor tile that you'll deconstruct after the wall is build, = are the constructed walls, + are the permanent floors.

Cheers

yes the shoreline is completely square it is just a large river though not a part of an ocean,

And no I am 99% positive there are no necromancer towers near by if there was i most likely would have been murdered by now (and I studied the embark before I embarked)

Okay excellent thank you that will help amazingly I just got a migrant wave currently have +50 dwarves and only enough living space for 40

An Elven Caravan arrived and shortly after we were greeted by 2 Goblin Ambush Squads, the melee squad attempted to charge my archers but were cut down by my traps, the archers attempted to go toe to toe with my archers and they were quickly defeated with only one dwarf being injured by a arrow to the foot.

So far things are going great the butchering operation should be nearing soon as we have 15 yak calfs soon to being adults,

I take it you're using the central courtyard as a pasture? I can't imagine anywhere else working without risking the cattle, but you never marked the Pastureland.
