When I'm generating a new world, I usually play the Game of Thrones opening. The mental image of sites like dwarf fortresses and elven forest retreats unfolding like the clockwork fortresses in the opening sequence is pretty cool.

For evil biomes, I listen to this theme from Pikmin 3, since it gets the whole "this place is not a good place to be in" feeling.

And when winter comes, or when a siege has killed off a lot of dwarves, I listen to "Goodbye Brother" from the Game of Thrones OST.

Other than that, I mostly use Soundsense, though there are some tracks that I play more often than others.

I have a playlist of music I extracted from Portal 2, Half-Life 2 (and both episodes), Left 4 Dead 2, and Team Fortress 2. I have that playing on shuffle usually.

One thing someone could do is to create a program that play a order 1 markov chain version of the dwarf fortress song. So you would sort of have the original song and also have various songs.

For adventure mode I have a lot of Blind Guardian, Iron Savior, Gamma Ray, other fantasy/sci-fi themed metal bands with two-word names.

For fort mode, it's the Command and Conquer soundtrack, more of the above, Your Favorite Martian, the music from the Lord of the Rings musical, or whatever best fits the situation.

I sing a bit of '99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall' when I'm building a lot of stills at once.
