it would be nice if the things you do and the effects they have were described on-screen.
i mucked about for a few minutes and it seems the only thing i could order is a build on a 'logistics' something or other, but i have no idea what this does.  sure i can probably look it up, but i would like to see it right there on the screen.

I realize that the game is short on documentation. Please remember that this is a hobby project, not a commercial release, and while I have every intention of adding more in-game help (especially if the project continues to progress) for now it's just not a priority. I want to get the game made and features added, then look at how to use the features. I do try to update the wiki as often as I can, and there is a small, but growing, community at imperia.boards.net that might be able to answer some of your questions. To your point, I do want to add Edict tooltips soon, since obviously this is one of the major ways people will interact with the game. I hope you stick with it!

don't get me wrong, my criticism was made as a friendly advice.  i do like the approach you have with this game.  some time ago i asked on this forum if there was a 4x space game that had a good management level control and this game shows that potential.  i just don't like the break in atmosphere in popping out of the game every time i encounter something new and as a new player, this would be just about for everything.

No offense taken. I just wish I had more time to document the game. I know there are a sizeable amount of people who want to play, but aren't willing to work though the learning curve, especially when the game is so new there isn't a lot of help out there! Maybe this weekend I'll do a LP pointing out all the current facets of the game. Do you think that would help?

I love the idea of component research, that you can guide it but can't completely control what gets researched. I've always felt that 4x games suffer from having rigid research/tech trees - you end up quickly finding an optimal route after a few plays, even if it's a big tree.

This also allows for pretty much endless escalation in tech - it'd be good if there was a sort of 'plateau', where there are few regular advancements but if you were to heavily focus on that area you might get the occasional breakthrough.

Huge update coming in about a week or so. .410 will completely change the way you look at Imperia. Also, ships and guns!!!

The military system will be in .410, including ground troops (finally you can have stormtroopers to beat the populace senseless!), orbital fleets, and commanders.

I will attach the .410 WIP change log soon. ETA is variable with the holidays, but probably sometime next week.

EDIT: Oh, and there's a new modern installer/launcher, too!! Begone OneClick (well, it's still there as an option, but still). Good times all around.

How much of the micromanagement can be abstracted? The less this looks like a spreadsheet the more interested i'll be :P. On that note, rather then unrest saying "27", can you use something more flavorful? I understand this is still alpha ;).

The whole idea of the game and the design is that you are macromanaging your Empire, as opposed to approving every last nut, bolt, and dollar as in most other games. The character interaction model is very detailed, and you have access to a lot of data, but most of your rule is controlled through Edicts of planet/system/sector/empire scope.

I definitly think it looks really nice, and seems to be coming along well.

If you know of Aurora, I find it mildly amusing that both you and the person who makes Aurora are named Steve.

My mistake, i remembered half an hour too late. Nevertheless, data delivered via a stream of advisors and potentially lickspittles could perhaps afford to have a little cooking of the books, and those same advisors make more broad, concise statements about the state of affairs? It would escalate paranoia and betrayal a lot more if you're working with unreliable information, and i'd prefer to read "Our factory's feed the bastions, but still more automation is angering these useless primitives" then parse numbers.
