If you want some nice testing you could probably put a test plan spreadsheet on Google Docs and hope people are nice enough to not sabotage it and if they fit the requirements they can fill in some tests.

Or have a general error sheet they can fill in which can be used to spot any trends on crashes/bugs

Figuring out why a planet generates the revenue it does is hard.

The meat of it is in manufacturing. The thing is, cost/profit per mTON of material fluctuates wildly on the same planet. If it was based on strategic resource rating and tectonics like the blog says, it wouldn't be. There's something else.
And I assume it's not the population employed there that does it.

Agriculture cost/profit pet mTON can even vary between negative and positive. Again, on the same planet.

3 additional factors come into play: wages(the more you pay workers, the less profit), the size of the sector(larger sectors are generally more efficient) and unrest (unrest drops output by % of total unrest). I am thinking about better ways to show this. Viceroys will adjust wages up and down depending on need (employment vs. profitability) and smarter viceroys will do a better job with this.

Thanks for answering that  :)

I had a quite big playing session, furthest I ever got.

I took my -400B capital, bestowed the imperial honor to the viceroy as always and got him to lower gov subs quite a bit. That got it almost even, then a few turns later the viceroy doubled industry taxes and got it to +150B.
With expanding manufacturing, it even got close to +300B toward the end.

I abandoned all scientific outposts as they are useless at the moment.
This brought my empire finances close to positive.

However by the time I knew which systems I wanted to keep, they were running out of materials. Using empire materials and ADM, it would take about 80 months to build each starbase.
In fact, even abandoning those planets would take 80 months as they didn't have the money in reserves so it would have to come from the empire.
I'm pretty sure my treasury would be empty long before then, with those edicts active.

The game crashed at that point, at the end of a turn.

Awesome! 2 questions:

1) You say 'as always' with the Imperial Honor - you can only give out 3 Star Knights, 2 Grand Knight, and 1 Imperial Knight honors. Do you feel like it's too powerful a tool to adjust loyalty, or too inexpensive?
2) What were you/the program doing when it crashed? And do you remember generally what your Political Support (PoSup) was? This will help a lot.

Congrats on getting so far - right now, the game honestly plays more like a roguelike (see how long you can live before your people take you down) than a true 4X, but that will change as features are added and additional actions are available to you.

I think it would be cool if you could design and name your own awards, and the amount of bonus loyalty they earn scales with how many awards are in circulation and of which type. So if, say, you handed out "Viceroy of the Month" awards to everyone, the it would have very little effect and possibly even cause people to see you negatively. On the other hand, giving your top military officer a Grand Admiral's Star - the only one in the galaxy - would be a huge honor.

1) ah I didn't know that! Honored people people become  STK, I now see that's Star Knight, haven't honored them further than that. Perhaps it's too powerful but normal 50k bribes rarely seem to work for me and I haven't gotten fancy with the intel network yet. So I'm glad it's there.

2) Hm I definitely had an abandon planet edict going. Maybe I had also started a starbase with empire credit, but probably not.
There were some planets with no materials and even one with no food. Empire PoSup about 42%, the worst planet had 27% and 31 unrest.
Then I pressed end turn and it crashed right there, before the "scheming and plotting" screen.

Edit: my resolution was 1920x1080, windows 7 64 bit, if that helps

Ah. Ok, I bet I know what happened. The planet that you abandoned probably had active Edicts going (starbase?) and since I didn't clear out the active Edict queue, the system would find no way to complete the Edict, thus crashing. And if that's not what happened, it would have.  ::) Fixed. Thanks!

Yes. I want to do more with awards than just an 'instawin' effect. I want them to affect stats, and especially relations between each other. There is an internal jealousy stat that everyone has with everyone else that is already programmed and updating, but it doesn't do much right now since there are no real inter-character interactions right now. That will change.
