Will you - the emperor - have some kind of dreaded meter, for lack of a better word, beyond tyrant points? Like if you regularly purge your officers, will people become too frightened to actually plot against you, Stalin style? Be more likely to just obey you without having to expend resources because they're just terrified? Or does the tyrant points represent that in it's entirety?

The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers.

It does not always work like that however. And is the alpha free?

Because of very effective propaganda, I would say. Not something the Empire understood, but something that both Putin and Fox News (and Fox's sponsors) do.

Have you given much thought to a diplomacy system for interacting with other (human or alien) governmental bodies?

"In the grim darkness of the future there is only war."

"In the grim darkness of the FAR future there is only war."

In the grey doldrums of the current present there are only philistines.

I resent that claim.

I really hope not. Trade and diplomacy can be as interesting as warfare.

Kind of fitting, as diplomacy - mainly between human factions, humans and tau, and humans and eldar - actually happen all the time in 40k, never mind the rogue traders and their interactions with xenos.

Question:

Will you - the emperor - have some kind of dreaded meter, for lack of a better word, beyond tyrant points? It may seem like a silly question, but I assure you there's a proper thought process somewhere behind it.

Not a silly question at all! You have a 'behind the scenes' Paragon/Renegade-like rating that affects your pool refresh rates, but also affects your character's attitudes towards you as a ruler. Yes, you can rule by fear, but fear will also tend to unite people behind your destruction if they get desperate enough. Since the game calculates attitudes in a deterministic way, it's impossible for me to tell at this point whether you can 'cow' people enough. I am thinking of adding a hidden 'courage' stat that would be a check against something like this, though.

Yes. There will be a full diplomacy system. You won't meet aliens so much like other 4X - they will be splinter empires that slowly drifted away from your empire and now may or may not actively work against you. Part of maintaining your PoSup is showing the people that you are reuniting your Empire - peaceful assimilations are worth just as much as bloodthirsty conquests, and in fact may actually lower PoSup if you are warmongering too much (after all, you're essentially killing and fighting your own race) unless that splinter empire is actively resisting you and trying to take over Empire territory. There will also be a specific alien threat later in the game!

Yes. This is a hobby project, this game will always be free. Remember that while you're playing the first version.  8)

I'm very excited by this! Are you thinking of implementing an espionage system? A lot of 4x games have it as pretty low priority and it's usually only in as a way to bug people in multiplayer. I'd love to see a 4x game with a really strong link between espionage, diplomacy and warfare and a lot of different actions/abilities for spies above the usual 'sabotage this' or gain 'generic information'.

This would be especially interesting with crusader kings/distant worlds style characters. Distant worlds definitely does this the best, but I still feel it could be an exciting improvement over usual 4x games.

With enough work and polish, it could have been a forgettable flash game on Kongregate.
