Can't access the Military Screen

As stated in the thread title, all I can access with the 'm' key is some stupid preferences selector screen. It is getting rather annoying to restart dwarf fortress entirely whenever I want to change anything with my military. I can only access the military screen for the first 5 minutes or so of a save before the preferences screen pops up. Any help please?

Press alt. Do not hold it. Then press m. When you alt + tab out of the game, the game treats it like the alt key is still being pressed. And alt + m takes you to preferences. If that fails, try disabling the plugin via DFhack.

To fix the horrid default colour scheme, follow the below steps:
Profile> Modify Profile> Look and Layout> Current Theme> (change)> Darkling

Why doesn't everyone play in windowed mode? It makes things so much easier.

i play in windowed,but still tab.im in the habit of double tapping Alt (alt tab out,alt tab in,plus another alt)
