You'll walk by the opportunity to flood the fort either way, so I'll let this poll cook for a bit longer and give you the option to connect the fort to the lake after that.

Try the axedwarves anyway. We'll figure something out.

We should flood the fort.
What?!

For the record, I was just joking about flooding the fort. I'don't rather not ruin the story by drowning everyone.

No. That's stupid. We'd drown.

...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is the entryway to the fort. Haulers should be busy moving items to the depot we just passed, but the fort has a lot of shoulds right now. The axedwarves form a greeting party for whatever siegers that didn't get bored and left before authum. Their first day of duty went bad in a giant moose accident. More than half of them died, and the others refused to move away from this spot for some reason. The fort responded by trying to accomodate them here, bringing them food, drink and beds, and plating the room with gold.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They hybernate during the summer, wake up when the lake freezes over and kill whatever not-dwarf comes through that wooden walkway. When the lake is closed off, they feast on caravan goods and go back to sleep.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They don't actually eat during the warmer seasons, but some cautious dwarves insist on having food in here just in case.

Now, how do I get them to deal with the magma men?

Throw something at them from a distance.

Just hand full of sand, or do you want to look for something else somewhere?

Look for a rock, then sharpen it.

You're three layers above rock, with a depot and hallway between you and the main staircase (which is clean and rockless). Finding a rock will take some time, especially since Catten has already ran all the way up on an empty somach.

Umm. Could we find bits of metal somewhere?

There is a trap corridor somewhat closer to the entrance. There might be bits there.

Yell "Kobold!" or "Goblins!" or "Wake up, it's winter!" or "HOLY SH*T THERE ARE MAGMA MEN ON THE FORGE! GET DOWN HERE YOU LAZY BASTARDS!"
Or throw the pickaxe at one of them. What could possibly go wrong?

My second turn's unnoficial goal was to turn everyone into vampires, and it backfired so bad, I ended up making the fort a more efficient, safer and friendlier place.
Apparently they evolved a taste for everything I love and care about

The pickaxe is still in the forge. Silky didn't take it with her.

Wanna go back down and get it back? :P

I'm gonna go put up a poll now. There's plenty of options.

Just shout that there are magma men in the forges.
*Huff*
"-There are magma men in the forges! Wake up and do something!"

"..ugh"

Oh, heeeeell no.  You are the mother fucking mayor.  Order those fuckers out of bed. Threaten to replace their booze rations with water if they don't get their lazy asses out bed and do their fucking jobs.
