Violet stirred from her semi-daze at the question. Riding on horseback always had that effect on her, since she couldn't exactly do much to direct it.
: "I can smell smoke somewhere ahead. It might be the village, but I don't know for sure. Could just be someone's campsite."

"Hmm... I don't see any smoke, but I'm not saying you're wrong."

Noel dropped his horse back a little to trot next to Violet's. Her blindness was rather fascinating - especially the effect it appeared to have on her other senses. Could she really smell traces of smoke in the air from this distance - assuming there was any to smell, of course?

"...Although I do hope you're wrong. Dealing with bandits - and worse, a burning village - would be such a bother. It would be much better if this is another false alarm... although I am worried that maybe this time it isn't, that perhaps the idea was the Princess has been on so many of these investigations that maybe she would think this one was false too and not go see the situation."

[Sirus]

: "There is no need to be so gloomy, Noel. Even if the smoke I smell is coming from the village, it is most likely to be coming from cooking fires or possibly the local smith, rather than burning buildings."
: "Anyway, whether this is a false alarm or a real situation, at least we're getting out of the castle for a day or two. Isn't that nice?"

[SeriousConcentrate]

"I suppose you're right at that, but I have little love for rustic settings either."

Truth be told, living in the castle itself didn't bother Noel so much as his station within it. If pressed, he would grudgingly admit it was a nice place with decent people. But his hands weren't meant to hold a broom or wash a pot; they were meant to turn pages or perhaps hold a scepter of authority. Someday... yes, someday that would be the case.

"As for the other I don't know whether I'd prefer the stress of fighting off a bandit raid or the annoyance of having my time wasted. If I had my way I'd be in the castle library studying magic. But I suppose needs must. Whether this is a real or false alarm, we do have to see it through to the end."

Noel petted his horse's neck, out of a need to be doing something with his hands. While he didn't care much for walking, trusting his life to the whims of a dumb beast was hardly preferable. If the horse took a notion to throw him he could break his neck, or do himself a less severe but still major injury. It would be much better to be riding in the back of a coach where one was relatively safe from the elements. And had cushioned seats.

"I hope it's cooking smoke you're smelling. Maybe if nothing else we can get a meal out of coming to this village."

Josephine couldn't take much more of it and stared all the while at her cup of frothing spring water--quite an attraction the innkeeper made as her own recipe. Tangy to the taste, and pretty much as quenching as water is (without most side effects), she looked between Sarah and Kosko as they chatted.
More Zarasutra. She kept her stillness, letting the newcomer speak.

She had bad memories with some words the missionary was saying and was more than happy to let the two speak.

"I still had that question on Zarasutra on if he was everything and everything was he; why do we have to die when we are him?"

"Would you prefer being free and able to swim across Zarasutra as part of it, or be locked in flesh and limited by capabilities of your muscles, wandering slowly upon this earth? Your soul is currently imprisoned, ready to re-join the ever-flowing sea of Zarasutra, yet the muscles are unwilling to let it go. The heart that controls emotions and mind that controls thoughts, these two muscles are main obstacles to freedom of one's soul."

"That's why I do not fear death - better, I would welcome it with open arms, once I teach everyone about Zarasutra!"

Josephine rotated her cup and watched the last bits of liquid swirl around the bottom, before looking back at the priest with a curious expression.

"Look, I-...I "wasn't listening" back there in that I didn't get it at all. We're not locked in flesh or limited by what we can do: we just have to develop what we have in the current time so that we can...have worth, if that's what I get you're talking about Zarasutra.

"What can my soul do when it is free?"

[Haspen]

"Whatever it wants!"

"Well, in fre state the soul can traverse the plane of existence instantenously and even visit the stars on the sky. Of course, you won't remember anything from that experience. Leaving Zarasutra is very hurtful for a soul particle; memories get lost and you never get the same 'you', body I mean, as before..."

"But I've heard of people who apparently remember details from their prior life. Clearly, they must be powerful parts of Zarasutra given form, only that could allow them to remember such things."

...Strange. Then...my own thoughts are true that I do remember details before I was born? Interesting...
"If suicide is for Zarasutra, then what is his or his followers' view on war or such? Killing seems similar, though I feel that its doubtfully not the same. Right?"

Just then, a villager rushed into the inn.

"BANDITS! They burned down the stables. We managed to rescue the mounts, but they're attackin now. We need to flee!"


"Hahahaha. Good! Burn it all to the ground. Our orders are to not leave a single building standing. No pay unless that happens. No orders on what we're to do with the villagers, so have your fun."
