Goblins are richer than any other civ
« on: April 30, 2014, 12:48:36 am »

They must be. Every year, sometimes twice a year, I get a siege. I generally slaughter every single invader, but sometimes one gets away. My fortress is flooded with a back log goblinite. Yet the next siege is sure to come. No matter how thouroughly I destroy them they easily have enough resources to send another useless invasion, armed with metal. While I would easily count my dwarves the worth of any 10 goblins, they seem to have those goblins to spare. At this point I think they are just using me to advance their evolution by sending me the weaker tribes to slaughter. And where will that lead? Goblin evolution, that's where.

Lol. It is true that it is pretty impressive that the goblin war machine can sustain such heavy casualties and loss of resources. That is part of how Rome beat hanibal with sheer numbers over tactical superiority.

Won't that lead to a race of cowards, as only the ones who run away make it back?
But anyway, it must be true goblins are both more fecund and more industrious than dwarves, although they don't seem capable of producing anything of quality, neither in their progeny nor their crafts

So, Rome was defeated by FPS death? Makes sense to me.

Well, considering I sell my trash to merchants, it may well be they are just sending us their trash invaders....

Their economy isn't as good as you might think, after all you sell the goblinite off to merchants then next year a new goblin horde shows up wearing last years second-hand battle-damaged gear.
How they come across that gear is debatable, however theft is an option.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

Unless atomsmashing magically sends items into the goblin civ's stockpiles, they'll have a hard time repossessing the stuff they leave at _my_ forts. I never sell imported weapons and armour to caravans.

So as far as i can tell, the goblins _do_ have the industry and population to raise and equip 100+ warriors per year, and send them in endless waves against a single dwarven fort, with very few if any returning and no damage done to the fort. The game somewhat supports that assessment - last time enough megabeasts died in my fort to trigger a world age change, we switched to the age of goblins.

Some Goblin have also enough Cave Dragons that they can aford to send them in battle as liberally as if they was mere war dogs. I mean... trained freaking Cave Dragons... realy ? I think we can say whatever we want about how bad the goblins are, they surely are better beast masters than the dwarves.

What goblins need is to take the same ability to tame trolls and build obsidian fortresses and build some bloody siege engines/trenches.

Maybe while you hide away they build a siege tower and drop rocks on your fort/execute prisoners?

Also cavern sieges/the ability to 'find' and use 'downward passages'

The day that the goblins become a true threat is the day they learn to dig, disarm traps and destroy bridges.

In one of the threetoe's stories they were coming right from the netherworld materializing by their demon lord will, their dark fortresses being simple transition points. So conservation laws hardly apply to them. Not that they apply to anything in df.

As a history buff, Rome TOTALLY WAS killed by fps death.

But Hannibal was beating Rome for a long time, because Rome was having problems with the military pathing because Toady hadn't implemented military tactics yet, so Rome just ran at Hannibal's forces the second they saw them and then got surrounded by Hannibal's pincer tactic.

(On topic, Dwarf-Fort related, and historically accurate. You're welcome. lol)
