Wow, I'll probably catch up on the main AAR at some point, but are the allied forces asleep?

Nope, actually I think they are playing very well so far. They have avoided major losses(outside of China any way) by nott opposing overwhelming forces where they havent needed to.

Do you people object if I just start and spam the other AAR here too from now on?

February 5 1942, the new guys of the Chitose Kokutai S-1. The pilots with 0 sorties.

I'll try it out, if people find them to clutter too much I can always stop.

February 5 1942

China: Another day of bombing. Ki-43s sweep Sian(aerial recon revealed fighters there) and bag 4 I-15s without getting even fired at once. Knowing how good the Chinese fighter pilots are I wouldnt let them fly combat sorties before going through several months of training first.

Burma: Prome falls! The Retreating British force retreats towards Magwe instead of Akyab, which would have been much safer option. Now this force too is in risk of getting pocketed or bloodied again.

Ground combat at Prome (55,50)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 8796 troops, 116 guns, 36 vehicles, Assault Value = 272

Defending force 8267 troops, 137 guns, 24 vehicles, Assault Value = 233

Japanese adjusted assault: 133

Allied adjusted defense: 51

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Prome !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender: disruption(-), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
      282 casualties reported
         Squads: 0 destroyed, 30 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
         Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Allied ground losses:
      4287 casualties reported
         Squads: 127 destroyed, 6 disabled
Non Combat: 192 destroyed, 0 disabled
         Engineers: 36 destroyed, 0 disabled
      Guns lost 72 (72 destroyed, 0 disabled)
      Vehicles lost 20 (20 destroyed, 0 disabled)
      Units retreated 4
      Units destroyed 1

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
    Imperial Guards/B Division
    Imperial Guards/C Division
    55th Mountain Gun Regiment
    21st Medium Field Artillery Battalion

Defending units:
    46th Indian Brigade
    1st Gloucestershire Battalion
    17th Indian Division
    103rd RN Base Force
    100th RAF Base Force

Malaya: starting the march to Singapore in a couple of days. I know I may capture it a bit behind the historical schedule, but I did use at least 1 division less than the historical Japanese force too.

DEI: Samarinda invasion D minus 2.

PI: The Allies have forgot a PI division and a base force at Iba. IJA sent some tanks and an Infantry regiment to take care of them but looks like no progress will be made for some time unless the defenders happen to be short on supplies.

South Pacific: -

Central Pacific: USN has sent what looks like one of the many anti-submarine destroyer forces to take care of Nosiro. They're sighted by sub-borne E14Y floatplanes. Nosiro will withdraw.

Unfortunately also right between Midway and Aleutians the IJN replenishment TF supporting raiders runs directly into 2 USN ships, a xAK and its escorts. While its interesting to know that the Allies apparently move troops using this route and even without escorts, the raider force has been revealed and its safety is compromised. Changing to plan B: see if theres anything worth attacking near Dutch Harbor and then bug out.

Submarines: I-171 bags a TK near Melbourne(she had laid mines here earlier but no luck with them).

Sub attack near King Island  at 81,173

Japanese Ships
      SS I-171

Allied Ships
TK Gulfking, Torpedo hits 2,  heavy fires,  heavy damage
      TK Alfred Clegg
      TK Mobilstation
      DD Cone

I had noticed that the USN subs had been checking out the various bases in the Gilberts and Marshalls probably looking for cargo ships or stationed bigger warships. Dunno. They had checked out all but Kwajalein, Eniwetok(these 2 have minefields and strong defences initially) and Tarawa. Jaluit was secured only recently and since the sub there was driven away with depth charges I figured I could unload some supplies at Tarawa too and let the CM that was with the force to drop its mines there. That was 6 days ago. A USN sub finally paid a visit today and hit 3 mines!  [:D]

TF 301 encounters mine field at Tarawa (136,128)

Allied Ships
SS S-34, Mine hits 1,  on fire,  heavy damage
SS S-34, Mine hits 1,  on fire,  heavy damage
SS S-34, Mine hits 1,  on fire,  heavy damage
[8D]

Scratch another one! I think after this one the Allies will stop using subs as aggressively as they have now. Hopefully not, though.

February 6 1942

China: More bombing...

Burma: IJAAF and IJNAF bombers keep bombing the retreating British.

Malaya: Lots of bombers lost over Singapore again... Even at 20,000 I suffer nearly 10% losses on average. Thats 9 bombers lost today alone. Not all AAA units even made it to Singapore.

DEI: Samarinda invasion D minus 1.

PI: -

South Pacific: -

Central Pacific: As expected, USN destroyer force finds and sinks AMC Nosiro.

Submarines: A USN sub enters Taihoku(oil port on Formosa) and hits a mine!

Erkki, I have a question: on the starboard side of the Akagi there is a kind of big vent that can be seen spewing water on some pics. What is it for?

Thats the exhaust stack! Many of the IJN carriers had the stack to the side. I suppose it was to minimize the size of the island structure at least.

edit: you can see in on this model too:

Oh, so it's smoke, not water. :p I guess it's because they were converted from cruisers. They had to re-route the smokestacks around the flight deck. By the way, it's a shame that the original 3-flight deck was retrofitted into the more sensible, but less awesome 1-deck model. Those decks looked awesome!

Heres a pic from wikipedia of the Akagi with the original flight deck arrangement. Kaga also had 3 decks.

Notice how the middle deck has gun turrets on the sides...

I dunno, but the middle deck seems to be a little short.

Yeah, wiki says just 15 meters... The planes were apparently supposed to speed up within the hangar. Lol.

February 7 1942

China: IJA division crosses the river from Kanhisien towards Pingsian and(unsurprisingly) beats the snot out of the defending KMT Corps that had been bombed for weeks!

Ground combat at 82,55 (near Pingsiang)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 12981 troops, 104 guns, 42 vehicles, Assault Value = 464

Defending force 4204 troops, 42 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 119

Japanese adjusted assault: 584

Allied adjusted defense: 2

Japanese assault odds: 292 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: leaders(+), disruption(-), experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker: shock(+), leaders(+)

Japanese ground losses:
      300 casualties reported
         Squads: 0 destroyed, 56 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
         Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

Allied ground losses:
      2167 casualties reported
         Squads: 156 destroyed, 13 disabled
Non Combat: 47 destroyed, 0 disabled
         Engineers: 4 destroyed, 6 disabled
      Guns lost 24 (11 destroyed, 13 disabled)
      Units retreated 1

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
    104th Division

Defending units:
    88th Chinese Corps

Revealed by aerial recon, in Hengyang the Chinese seem to be moving a great number of units towards Kweiling... IJAAF bombers will pay a visit tomorrow. Good part of these Chinese troops are probably the same ones that were driven away from the coast, around Nanchang and from Kukong-Kanhisien area.

Chinese bombers fly a rare attack sortie and hit IJA troops near Changsha. This great IJA force is having a sitzkrieg war with their Chinese counterparts.

Burma: IJ bombers hit British troops at Magwe and cause considerable damage. British Blenheims attack IJA troops in Prome - IJAAF will be providing fighter cover tomorrow.

Malaya: -

DEI: Samarinda invaded! The landings go smoothly and nearly all troops are ashore by the dusk. This landing force includes 2 regiments and an aviation support battalion - a 42-strong Ki-43-Ic Sentai will be flown in to protect the oil well tomorrow. Zero-LRCAP from CarDiv II shoots down all 3 attacking Martin 139WH bombers over the fleet.

Hudsons attack advancing IJ troops near Makassar. Allied air forces have been flying a lot of these kinds of itty-bitty attacks, to little effect.

Tomorrow: IJA paratrooper regiment will drop to Lautem on Timor, from Kendari. There are over 50 transport aircraft available for this operation. I hope to catch more Catalinas on the ground!

North Pacific: CarDiv III sights 2 small merchant task forces near Kodiak, Alaska, but only the other B5N unit launches twice and both times has to turn back. Zeros attack some xAKs with 60kg bombs but miss. CS Chitose's floatplanes dont launch at all. First the replenishment TF encountered merchants in the middle of nowhere and now this. CarDiv III will be on its way home now...
